AKK was court singer in the princely state of Mysore , there he was heavily influenced by Karnatik style singers , ex: elongated melodious alaps in the beginning of raga , which later on became signature character of kirana style singing.

Indeed. Also the attractive sargam-s were a result of his adaptations from Carnatic music.

This high-pitched, sureela singing was a feature in the pre-microphone days as the voice had to reach out to the audience in a large mehfil or a theatre hall.

Glad that you liked the recording. The artist is one of the all time greats of our sub continent. The raag Yamani Bilawal has no surname, though. :)

Thank you for pointing this out. The LP record of Abdul Karim Khan's compilation of 78 rpm-s, mentions the raag as *Bilawal* indeed. However, I have always considered it as Yamani Bilawal for the following reasons: 1. The repeated use of the Ni'-Re-Ga/ Ni'-Re-Ga-ma-Ga which is a discernable trait of Kalyan / Yaman-Kalyan. Also, the mukhda of the raag hovers in the 'purvaang' with Ga being the dominant note... another Yaman-like trait. 2. Assuming that we all consider Bilawal to be Alhaiya Bilawal, the Komal ni is a pivotal note. That note is missing in this rendition (except for a short glimpse in the first bit of that beautiful sargam). Renowned exponents of other Gharana-s like Vilayat Hussain Khan & Narayanrao Vyas have rendered Bilawal (in 78 rpm discs) and they are structured as Alhaiya Bilawal (with Dha as the dominant note *and* a prominant komal nishad). 3. Lastly, Bhimsen Joshi, a student of Abdul Karim Khan's prominent disciple, Sawai Gandharv, has always rendered this bandish as Yamani Bilawal (I have shared a link in the video-description). These are my considerations. Would love to hear other's views. Thanks again for bringing this up.

Almost all of Khan-sahab's 78 rpm recordings of the 1930-s have been released as LP-compilations. There are three such LP-s.
