Ustad Abdul Karim Khan (1872-1937) is generally acknowledged to have introduced the format of modern Vilambit Khayal, where he did Raga Alaap (improvisation) within a slow rhythmic structure - using the words of the composition. But no recording of Khansahib's long performances (in All India Radio and Concerts) has survived to this day. So - apart from those who listened to him live - one can only imagine how they were like. To have a feel, I have joined two 78 RPM records of the same raga by Ustad Abdul Karim Khansahib - 'Ab maine dekhe' in slow Ektala and 'Phagba brij' in Tintal. I had to struggle a bit to match the pitches and sound quality of the two records - and the result is not entirely satisfactory. Please enjoy.
