Thank you so much for making this film. I was only 2 when this disaster happened but I remember my grandmother weeping over the deaths of the children. Of course Aberfan was traumatised.....and so was the rest of the country. RIP children.

I sit here with tears streaming down my face, I was 14 at the time , I grew up in the coalfields of Derbyshire. I went on to become a firefighter and have witnessed some extremely sad sights, but I remember this so clearly. My heart aches!

Very moving piece, well shot, edited and put together. The aerial footage in particular gives a meaningful perspective on how the tragedy unfolded. The terrible events of that day fifty years ago still generate a deep sadness and sorrow within us today, it was a tragedy that traumatised the entire nation and people around the world.

Very well done, I remember the day this happened. I am a first generation Canadian of Welsh descent and on that day my father was in shock, my grand father was not in good health and was yelling "That couldn't happen, that couldn't happen." It did, it shakes me today to imagine had I lived in a tiny village, at 55 today I could have been one of the lost souls.

I live in a small mining (Pit) village in North East England and we had a big pit heap down the road from us. I was 11 when the disaster happened I came in from our village school to see my Mam sitting in front of the TV crying. Miners Daughter and proud of it👍

I was in school with my classmates, only a mile over the mountain when this happened, same age as those children, doing the same thing, just finnished morning prayes in assembly. Such a tragice event, all those lives and futures. Still effects a lot of people to this day.My late father went over there with a shovel to help along with his mates.

Great V/log Sir, well done !! you should be recognised for this piece, if you are not in the media industry. Very moving, terrific aerial shots paint a 3 D picture of terrain, & how this tragedy happened. My mom told me about this disaster in around 1976, when I was 8 yrs old, after watching a documentary, around the time, called the children of aberfan, made in B&W and has always resonated with me ever since. This piece is a great tribute to the families 50 years on, of something that never should be forgotten. My only question is why build a tip on a mountain side in the first place, and not take the slag to flat ground, presume as near to colliery sites, but Lord Robens and the NCB from what I can see, especially after watching last nights BBC Documentary by Hugh Edwards, (which was terrific Btw ) all got off with a mere hand slap? just crazy, and took decades for the families to get reparations for their lost loved ones. So so wrong, in every moral way, please watch it on catch up TV if u have it. Thoughts go to all the effected people of Aberfan 50 years on.

Thanks Simon, not i the media industry I'm just a youtube vlogger but something like this I just felt I needed to to. A lot of the kids and even late teens are not aware what happened.

It is obvious with hindsight that this was dangerous, indeed there had been slips before but health and safety back then was lax compared to nowadays.

I think it was watching the Crown that lead me here. I was in school, down on the coast 35 or so miles away from Aberfan on the day. I vividly remember the hushed whispers as the Headmaster visited (I guess) each class in turn. The ashen face of the teacher conveyed more than her words. Not fully understanding, we were all sent home early, I think late morning. I remember a documentary where, in addition to the weather, underground springs on the valley side, were a contributory factor. The NCB claimed no knowledge of these, except they were shown on all the OS maps!

I've just started watching. I was 24 years old in 1966 and recently married. My husband and I simply couldn't speak. I don't speak Welsh. Will somebody please tell me what 'Aberfan' means?
@LockyLive4 жыл бұрын
Aber translates to mouth of, as in mouth of a river. Fan is a hill or mountain so this doesn't make a lot of sense. Most Welsh towns with the name Aber are named after the river in the town but the river here is the taff which runs from pen y fan mountain to Cardiff bay.
