Remembering Aberfan

I was born a few years after Aberfan, not far away. Every year I feel the sadness and anger at the loss. It should never be forgotten.

My Father and my Uncle were two of the people who helped in the rescue effort. I’m honoured that my family tried to help.

I'm another person who was a child of the same age as those who died in the school and I remember how those images shocked me and changed how I saw the world. Seeing the miners digging as only miners can, seeing all the women in their raincoats and headscarves ( just like my Mum ) passing rocks to each other in a chain. Such a deeply sad event, made worse by the actions of the coal board and many in authority who should have done better.

Every year I pray for Aberfan. I have visited to pay my respects to those lost. The people of this village are amazing welcoming and forthright. As a Welsh mum I could never fathom the pain and sorrow these people suffered. God bless you all xx

Aberfan 21 October 1966, will haunt people for many years to come, but the worst of it is, it was preventable and should have and could have, been prevented. The NCB, led by a lord whose name should never be mentioned, even though we all know it, were warned on many occasions and knew from mapping surveys the danger that lurked beneath. If there was a bright are, it was the love shown by people everywhere, even all around the world, when donations came pouring in to try to help. Sadly though, the NCB could not refrain from pouring coal slurry all over that too, when they forced them to pay £150,000 of the donations, to go to the removal of other dangerous coal tips. Their bastardry knew no ends. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering of all those broken hearts, but our hearts go out to all those in Aberfan. I hope one day, to get there to pay my proper respects.

I Was 10 years old in December of 1966 and I well Remember the Aberfan disaster of Friday October 21st 1966 Something that should have been avoided and I hope to God that nothing like that will ever happen again anywhere in the world and I know that it was 53 years ago but at the end of the day the 116 children and 28 adults are still living Human beings
