My earliest memories are based in this town. They've got a castle... and a museum which contains an old shop ...lots of old stock on the shelves. Looks like something from the 1940s or 50s I think. I'm not that old. The B+M store used to be Woolworths. @6:38 on the left... that was a cinema a long time ago. Further down opposite side to St Mary's @8:12 was a tuck shop - an old style newsagents... to me that meant comics and sweets! Mum bought me a Texan bar there once... it was called the mighty chew. True to the slogan, I was chewing it for about 30 minutes, and my jaw ached afterwards! My favourite old style newsagents was just round the corner, on Cross St, opposite the King's Head. It was called Saddlers, and I went in there again during the 1990s... and it had the same smell of paper and ink that I remembered as a kid. Last time I looked it was an art shop. @9:49 is the entrance to the indoor market. That was busy on Tuesday, with food stalls, and even a pet shop. On Thursdays they used to hold auctions of house clearances. My dad bought me a box of toys there once... and it included a toy robot... must have been circa 1960s. I loved it. I notice Abergavenny has a Morrisons supermarket now. That used to be a livestock market. That's one big change. Lots of nice hills to climb around Abergavenny... though we used to call them mountains. I think the Blorenge (only word that rhymes with orange) might be a mountain. The Sugar Loaf is definitely a mountain. I thought of this, when I watched that film, 'The English man who went up a hill, and came down a mountain'. There's an inn just off the A465 (to Hereford), just after you pass the Big Skirrid (mountain). You will find the Skirrid Inn (opposite side of A465 to mountain and a mile or so further north). The inn claims to be the oldest in Wales. Supposedly travelling judge Jeffreys (17C), the Hanging Judge, would despatch people there. For effect, there's a hangman's noose in the stairwell. Thanks for the video.

Grew up in Abergavenny in the 90s then moved away. The place hasn’t changed that much apart from the cattle market which is now a Morrison’s. That’s a shame. For me the main shops now missing are Woolworths (now H&M), Halfords (now Neon Sheep) and Comet (now a Santander). There was a bakers called Pinches where there is now a Turkish mezze. I have fond memories visiting that place. Also noteworthy there used to be video rental store right at the bottom of high street (where the video started), eventually blockbusters came to town, but obviously that’s also long gone. Thanks for the video.
