The Lord Nelson in Urmston is worth a visit. Holt's pub, they brew their own version of stout called, "Trailblazer." I think you'd like it. Used to frequent there in my 20's, buy a packet of Park Drive and sink a gallon of Holt's bitter, sat happily puffing away in the front room affectionately known as, "The Chapel of Rest." Happy days.

Enjoyed your videos. I moved from Handsworth Wood ( your last video)to Anglesey where I worked in Bangor many years ago. The bars you visited seemed a bit tame but it was early. The locals told me to avoid certain bars where an English accent was not welcome. Home to Welsh Nationalists. Things could get tasty. Suggest you call in on Chester when you head North to Scotland Place of my youth and lots of great bars to wander around. You may want to avoid those frequented by the squaddies from the local army camp.

For those watching that may have wondered about the sign saying Free House. England's 'Free House' Heritage Prior to the 19th century, England had various types of establishments serving alcohol, including alehouses, taverns, and inns. The term “pub” emerged in the late 17th century to distinguish public houses from private residences. Beerhouse Act of 1830 The Beerhouse Act of 1830 marked a significant milestone in the history of public houses. This legislation allowed for the proliferation of smaller, more humble establishments, known as “beer houses,” which were granted licenses to serve beer and other beverages. These beer houses were often unpretentious, with a single room or two, and were subject to more restrictive licenses than traditional inns and taverns. Free Houses Free houses, also known as independent pubs, have a distinct history. These establishments were not tied to a specific brewery or pub company (PubCo), unlike most pubs, which were owned and controlled by breweries. Free houses operated independently, often with a diverse selection of beers and ales. They were not bound by the same restrictions as tied pubs and could offer a wider range of beverages. Decline of Free Houses By the end of the 19th century, the majority of public houses in England were owned by breweries, and the number of free houses decreased significantly. This was largely due to the consolidation of breweries and the expansion of their tied estates. Beer Orders and Pubcos In 1989, the British government introduced the Beer Orders, aimed at increasing the number of free houses by forcing breweries to sell their tied houses. However, this led to the creation of pub companies (PubCos), which acquired the tied houses and transformed them into branded establishments. As a result, tens of thousands of pubs remained tied to breweries, and the number of free houses remained limited. Modern Era Today, free houses in England are relatively rare, with only a few truly independent pubs remaining. These establishments often prioritize offering a diverse selection of beers and ales, as well as a unique atmosphere and character. Despite the decline of free houses, the concept remains an important part of England’s pub heritage, with many enthusiasts seeking out these independent establishments for their distinct offerings and charm.
