Thanks Will. I too love seaside towns in the winter when they are cold and empty. I tend to avoid them in season when they are packed and expensive.

Took the funicular when the kids were little but have never walked up the hill. We were last in Aber in October and could hardly stand up in the wind on the prom. Excellent film Billy

Next time, kick the bar. Ask a local what to do, why and the origins of the ritual.
@WillHuwАй бұрын
Very intriguing. Can you enlighten us?
@stephensmith799Ай бұрын
@@WillHuwKicking the bar is done for luck. However ‘kicking’ is an exaggeration. The correct technique is to place a foot on the bar at the North end of the prom and for the absolute purist the same thing needs doing at the southern extremity of the prom ie at the harbour. Why foot the bar rather than kick it as if kicking a ball? The following is theory: The same day that the National Library of Wales was opened officially in 1911 (marking a new charter for an existing library) a royal party including King George 5th also visited the Alexandra Hall next to that north end bar. (It is known as The Alex) Formalities completed, one of the party, perhaps the then Prince of Wales needed to tie his shoe laces. That bar mentioned above was a convenient prop. As the party walked away back along the prom, a mild mockery was made of the official party by several members of the public tying their laces ostentatiously on the bar. My sense of it was that it was a mildly mocking, mildly Welsh nationalistic gesture. The habit stuck. As an aside in the 1950s I used to live in Craiglais House, demolished in the 1970s. Our flat looked down on the bar and The Alex, a 100% women’s student residence then. Craglais House stood on that grassy mound which you walked next to on your walk up Constitution Hill (aka Consti) At midnight during rag week (probably) all the students streamed out of The Alex and ran up Consti in their nighties. I was probably three years old but the sight made a big impression on me. I think they were yelling and whooping. It looked fun, though unusual! We called them ‘The Wild Wild Women’. The survivors will be in their late eighties of nineties now, I think. Yes. They made quite an impression illuminated by moonlight. Nights in White Satin, almost? Is it a joke that the cafe at the top of the hill is called ‘Consti’, which is a complaint of the large intestine? Craiglais is the Welsh name for Consti. It means either Blue Rock or Green Rock as ‘glais’ used to be used to mean either green or blue. Only later was ‘gwyrdd’ introduced for the colour green.
