Thank you for providing some of the best info out there for a passion of mine, officiating. Recently had a situation involving a crowd member and administrator and I would love a video about proper crowd control and how to properly speak with administrators. Can’t wait for the next video!

I'm truly enjoying these videos. Growing up, basketball was one of the few things that brought me and my dad together. He played college ball and I ate, slept, and bled basketball with only the goal of doing the same. I had reconstructive surgery on my hand my senior year and lost half the season. No scholarship offers for me. I helped coach the girls team the year after I graduated and then pretty much turned the page and went to work. I had such a sick feeling then whenever I even tried to watch a game because I had invested so much into it and felt I didn't reach my potential. Fast forward 28 years and I now have 2 daughters who have taken an interest in the game. I had the opportunity to coach their little rec league team and just picking up a basketball again after all these years was like being reunited with your first love. So many lessons and experiences came rushing back. So many things I haven't thought about for decades. Started taking my 9 year old to some high school games and just the other day had the thought, I wonder if I'd enjoy officiating. I really don't know if I would. Officials have to deal with so much scrutiny and occasional abuse. Seems like a thankless job that ought to pay more. But I'm really enjoying how your videos are making me see and think about the game differently. I'm having to rely on an old memory when it comes to some of these rules but it's almost like hearing my dad's voice when you say what the correct call would be. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for sharing Rick! Officiating is a lot of fun, but it has to be right for the individual. Keep mulling it over!

35-year veteran high school basketball official. Play #1 no delay of game. Team does not have a time obligation to grab the ball. Once it is available to them , the count an start. Play#2 it is a defensive foul on inbound play. #3, there is 1.5 that should be on the clock. Responsibility goes to the lead until there is a play in his pca.

Clock is stoped look on the blue bench and you will see player #3 walk behind the coach and eventually steps on the court. Thank you

Q: Greg could you please address time on clock and the delay time it takes to sound horn ending a period/game... The game score was 41/39 With parents...fans...players... coaches...all stakeholders of the game see 0:00 on clock with home player outside the 3 point arch with two feet... both hands on ball and no release of try... then the player released the try...then the horn sounds after the release of try... the try was counted... home team wins 41/42 Visiting team/coach/fans feel the officials had stolen the game from them... That delay between clock timer and horn sounding ending game... Another end of game situation topic...

In the Bonus play. Question…. If this pass or try…. Was hit by the defensive player and then the horn for end of game sounds…. Then the ball goes in the bucket. Is the basket good? Does it make any difference if it was a pass or a try?
@BetterOfficials2 жыл бұрын
I say no goal. It is not a try. The ball becomes dead on the horn.

I really need your help regarding correctible errors. Im jam from the Philippines. We have a basketball tournament here and during our championship game in the fourth quarter with score tied at 66-66 with 1:54 remaining on the clock, a foul was called by my teammate which is a good call. We were on the defensive side, now there was an error regarding the foul, because instead of 4 fouls committed by my teammate, the table had an error in tallying the foul and said he had five fouls. Everyone knows that it was his 4th foul but the table had an error in tallying. We reviewed the video and we were right, its his fourth foul not the fifth foul. Both teams argued and we ended up cancelling our championship game. What should the correct decision be. Can we correct table error mistake in tallying fouls. Please i really want your help regarding this issue. Thank you, will be waiting for your reply and hopefully a video regarding this correctible error. Thank you

Is it legal for the ball to hit the floor on a out of bounds pass to a player out of bounds? It would be illegal to bounce the ball out of bounds on a pass to an inbounds player. 2:05
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
The key is that a ball passed between teammates out of bounds during a throw-in IS NOT A THROW-IN PASS.
@billriiff9115 Жыл бұрын
Greg did we see a blue bench player come off the bench and stand on the court?? Just asking. Trip should have been called in my opinion thus all the additional stuff would not have taken place. Thanks for the time.

Play 3, would there be time added back to the 5.7 after the delay of game had been given?
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, the ruling here is incorrect a delay of game should not have been issued. But we have no provision to put additional time back on the clock in this situation

on play #2 (the throw in)...i noticed that player A1 took the ball from the ref...after the no-trip fall, player A2 picked up the ball to resume the throw in...is that part legal?

Yes. After a scored goal, multiple teammates can be out of bounds during a throw in

What exactly was the infraction that led to the second delay and thus the technical? Did he touch the ball or violate the plane of the boundary or just stand too close?
@BetterOfficials2 жыл бұрын
Can't say definitively but it does not appear that the ball was contacted.
@jamesrobinson861211 ай бұрын
There are 4 factors on an inbound play. 3 on the defense and 1 on the offense. The defense 3 are reaching through the inbound plain( violation, intentional and technical fouls) offensive violation is catching an inbound pass out of bounds while standing inbounds. Intentional foul occurs when the defense touches the inbounder while they are in possession of the ball while still being out of bounds and holding the ball. Technical foul is while in possession of the ball while being out of bounds or the second reaching violation.
@markfischer10122 жыл бұрын
5 second count needed by center official to assist close game the trip might be caused by both players scrambling , #2 white traveled also before take foul center needed to slide closer to far pass play ,
@mariovercillo13192 жыл бұрын
On play 2, the delay of game on the throw in, I do FIBA games and the game clock always stops after a scored basket in last 2 min of a game, or OT, so we would never have this issue

Stopped clock helps here!

This is high school. Only way clock should have stopped, is for a Timeout, a foul, or violation.

with the 2nd play with player who trips, what if that pass wouldn't have hit the official and rolled to the bleachers, what's the call there?
@BetterOfficials2 жыл бұрын
Throw-in violation. Players have to be between the sidelines extended during throw-in.
@NicholasThompson-gn6bk2 жыл бұрын
The first play with the delay of game is incorrect. The correct ruling should be for the official to start the 5 second count as the ball is at the disposal of the team that wasn't responsible for the score. In short, start the 5 seconds as the ball is at the disposal of team white when team blue just scored. The player doesn't have to pick up the ball, just call the violation if they commit a 5 second throw-in violation; very smart play on white's part which was negated by the officials error.

Isn't that exactly what he said in the video?

I've been following for a while as a referee in the FIBA system and I have notice a few differences in the rules (as expected). Play 4 is the biggest difference so far. Under FIBA rules the referee is required to give a "don't break the plane gesture" when there is under 2 minutes to play in the 4th quarter and any overtimes. If the player then breaks the plane they are issued a technical foul. In this instance the player appears to break the plane which would result in a technical foul under FIBA rule. I don't know the rules in this scenario in US high school basketball, however; a rule change could potentially assist referee's in plays like these if the rule is different. Especially in this case because the referee crew erroneously gave a delay of game warning.

I love this being built into the mechanics from FIBA. It is simply a 'best practice' in an NFHS game.

Minus the initial erroneous delay of game call, this entire mess could have been avoided if they just would have called a trip/blocking foul on the inbounds. With the camera angle, the C should have been able to see exactly the same thing. If that happened in my game (FIBA), then it would have been a throw-in foul (1 FT and resume at POI) since it occurred in the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter or OT. However, with that said, if that happened we wouldn't have had this episode to enjoy.:~) Though, I still wonder why the administering official couldn't keep the count in his head after his visible count was interrupted? Also, on the inbounds just back the player away...no need for a T, but I think that it was the same official that called the initial delay of game.
@TreyThatGuy2 жыл бұрын
I think on Play 2, the official should’ve either called a foul on blue for tripping the white player that was in bounds, or simply keep counting the five second call and it would eventually be a five-second violation on white.
@BetterOfficials2 жыл бұрын
I agree about foul. The count should have continued uninterrupted
@russellfinch54932 жыл бұрын
This is a lesson learned in how a game go into the toilet in the last minute. Geez. No way I am calling a T on the defensive player in that situation. Blow the whistle and move him back. That is if his only issue here was that he was to close and not giving the inbounder enough room and did not actually break the plane. Now, even before that, I would have moved a couple of players from behind him just to make sure he had enough room to back up, or move one of the assistants to allow some more room. Secondly, on that foul shot, I know way back when, in NY state, they had a state rule where the defense did not have to occupy the bottom two boxes on a 2 shot foul. Don't know if it still exists but if this was a HS game there could have been some tourney rules that allowed this. Again, no one knows but straight off the top, that was clearly illegal. I actually thought they were shooting a T but then on the second, the defense came in to occupy. I hated games like this because once the horse is out of the barn, it is hard to get him back in. This game just went totally downhill.

By NFHS rule, the foul that is called is intentional. Why don't we call it? 2017-8 POI Intentional Fouls The committee is concerned about the lack of enforcement for intentional fouls during any part of the game but especially at the end of a game. The intentional foul rule has evolved into misapplication and personal interpretations. An intentional foul is a personal or technical foul that may or may not be premeditated and is not based solely on the severity of the act, and it is contact that: Neutralizes an opponent’s obvious advantageous position. Is on an opponent who is clearly not in the play. May be excessive. Is not necessarily premeditated or based solely on the severity of the act. This type of foul may be strategic to stop the clock or create a situation that may be tactically done for the team taking action. This foul may be innocent in severity, but without any playing of the ball, it becomes an intentional act such as a player wrapping his or her arms around an opponent. The act may be excessive in its intensity and force of the action. These actions are all intentional fouls and are to be called as such. Officials must be aware of the game situations as the probability of fouling late in the game is an accepted coaching strategy and is utilized by many coaches in some form. Officials must have the courage to enforce the intentional foul rule properly.

For us newbies, instead of just saying this is the call by rule, how about you mention the actual rule.
