Good morning Greg, I need to work on flagrant foul mechanics.... with that said #23 there was discussion around technical fouls. I understand the mechanics for direct on coach, etc... What is the proper mechanics for a flagrant foul. An example of this would be a defender intentionally fouling a kid on a drive but it rises above intentional with a forearm to the head? If anyone could answer, that would be helpful as I learn. Thank you.

No specific mechanic for NFHS. The 'heave ho' or point to the exit is often used. Not required tho.

Hello thanks for the videos awesome content. Is there a very basic set of videos you do? I’m so lost on the difference of enforcement of direct indirect personal tech team vs player so on. I’m new to the whole scene. I have learned a ton and appreciate it, I am looking even more dumbed down, is that available?

The best source of information for all these various fouls can be found in our most valuable tool, the NFHS Rulebook. Specifically, Rule 4 (definitions) Section 19 (Fouls). There you will find descriptions/definitions for each type of foul. After that, you’d want to jump straight to Rule 10 where you will find the penalties for each of these fouls. The Rulebook offers a lot of “aha” moments as you’re reading, as you will quickly find yourself beginning to understand the sport & rules on a much deeper level. As mentioned, as a new official I would recommend skipping straight to Rule 4 for the definitions, then Rule 10 for foul penalties. From there I’d read Rule 9 next for the violation penalties, then hop back to Rule 2 to learn all about your duties as an official. By this point you will start to have a very good understanding of the game and your duties, and can begin exploring how to address the various scenarios with Rule 5 (Scoring & Timing Regulations), Rule 6 (Live Ball & Dead Ball), Rule 7 (Out of Bounds & Throw-In), and Rule 8 (Free-throw). At this point there is only two rules left for you to explore… Rule 3 (Players, Substitutes, and Equipment) & Rule 1 (Court & Equipment)! Learn the book. Love the book. Read the book again and reference it often for clarity. It is easy to navigate and holds all of your answers within.

@@BetterOfficials I’m saying since flagrants get you ejected regardless of what type it would be, some might say that.

NFHS only has 1 type of flagrant foul. The penalty for a player or team member committing a flagrant foul is “disqualification.” This is not an ejection. The student athlete is no longer eligible to return to the game and must remain seated on the bench for the remainder of the game. They are still the responsibility of the head coach and must remain supervised. Now, as for the adult members of the bench (head coach, assistant head coach, etc.) receiving a flagrant foul, they are both disqualified AND ejected. The result of this ejection is that they must leave the vicinity (out of sight & sound) and have no further contact or interaction with the team for the remainder of the game. It goes a bit beyond this as well. Correct me if I’m wrong, but any team members receiving a flagrant foul must be reported by an official using a specified reporting method, and become ineligible to play in the following game (perhaps longer, to be determined by an NFHS governing body). I am unsure if a coach receives any ineligibility. In an effort to fully cover all bases here regarding the flagrant foul, I will add that if a team’s head coach is ejected from the game, and that team no longer has an adult who can assume the role of coach, then they forfeit the game. But please, correct me if I’ve been in error with any of this information. Thank you @BetterOfficials for your helpful & informative videos. They truly have improved me on my journey of officiating and are indeed appreciated!

Regarding question #43, I had a game over a decade ago wherein a player, late in the game, scored an “And-1” layup. Soon afterwards he taunted the opponent who fouled him, for which I whistled a Technical foul, which was his 5th and disqualifying foul. No bench personnel were available as his team had started with 6 guys, one of which already fouled out earlier in the game. So my partner and I awarded the FT attempt for the “And-1” to the coach’s selection of the four remaining on the court for that team.

For anyone who was left confused by Question 23., an Indirect Technical Foul can ONLY be assessed to the Head Coach, and it ONLY occurs when a Bench Personnel (assistant coach, manager, statistician, team member not in the game, all players during an intermission) is assessed a Technical Foul. As a result of the Bench Personnel receiving the Technical Foul, the Head Coach also receives an Indirect Technical Foul. This is the reason an Indirect Technical Foul is not added towards the Team Foul total for each half. It has already been accounted for during the Bench Personnel’s Technical Foul.
