A note on historiography: I am a 73 y.o. Born and raised in US. Loved history but schooling in several states (Arkansas, Florida etc) had poor attention to history, esp “World” history vs “American” (US) history. My memory as to the treatment of Alexander’s campaigns into (I presume) the Indus Valley is that his success was very mixed. In sum his victories such as they were were regarded as costly, almost Phyrric, his troops were faced with the possibility of him dying and leaving them stranded in this far off land, his wounds were very severe, and yes, the veterans were tired and wanted to go back to at least Babylon and enjoy the fruits of their ill-gotten gains, as recounted in a number of famous scenes. Such narratives underlined an admonition that even Alexander could overreach and that he was lucky to get out of India alive. I think that 18-19 Cent Philo Hellenism may have been a bit stronger in Britain and Germany than in U S.

According to various sources, Puru / Porus was a small king at Punjab border. He was 7 feet tall. He had 40 war elephants, and 10000 soldiers. In that battle, Alexander was injured badly and his army retreated. Meanwhile the Greeks were told by spies that, beyond Puru's kingdom, there is Nanda kingdom that has 2000 war elephants, and 300,000 army. ( It's king Dhana nanda insulted chanakya, thus creating Chandragupta Mourya ). Going further into India ( UP, Bihar), there is Ganga kingdom, with even bigger army. I had come across a documentary on this subject on youtube, where a foreign researcher mentions that Alexander killed almost all the Kings/Rulers he fought with. Porus was a 7 feet+ tall army commander of Chandragupt Maurya. So the astonishing fact he said was that Alexander had the support of a local rebel king, but he was injured during the battle + he lost a major part of his army + his favorite horse was killed, and he still pardoned Porus just like that and returned all his lands back....wtf!!! So his theory was that Alexander was injured and was no where winning the battle since this was the fist time he was battling 2 thousand elephants regiment in the forests of India, a small army which was fighting with valor. Hence a truce was called in with Porus, and in return for a safe passage, Porus was given lands. Alexanders commanders also knew that Chandragupta was waiting for them with an Army of 1lakh soldiers and ten thousands elephants across the Ganga.....hence they convinced Alexander that this was the only way out.....

If Alexander had won, he would have killed Porus right away in the battle, while Indian kings have a long history to give 'Jeevandan' to the enemy who had lost. If Porus had really lost the battle, he would have been most probably died protecting his kingdom (due to the values at that period of time). Also, Alexander's horse died during this battle. Genghis Khan spent a life-time uniting the nomads of the Gobi Desert. Perhaps he could have spent a life-time uniting India, if that was his geography instead. My point is that as great a conqueror as Genghis Khan was, when he was confronted with the people of India, he knew that even though this was a fight he could potentially win, these were not people that he wanted to have war with. Something i think Abhijit points out correctly, is that Genghis Khan was actually very principled, and systematic about how he conducted war. For example, the Islamic Kingdom in what is now largely Afghanistan and Pakistan, which he eventually destroyed, he sent trade and diplomatic envoys to them not once, but twice, and they were not only treated disgracefully, but the second group of envoys were murdered. I do not know what other decision Genghis Khan could have made at that point and still retain his honor in the eyes of his peers. He had to act militarily. If you say that what he did was overkill, that is for history to judge, but the way i see it, Genghis Khan was a man who valued the lives of seemingly low diplomats in his service. He did not think their lives were any less important than his own, and took frigging bloody vengeance for them! I wish i had a sovereign that believed in me that well! :)

The Greeks, although brave & strong had the habit of making up the things. The example of this can be seen in the movie 300, where Leonidas specifically selects that Spartan soldier who was well-versed in reciting the events & one the spy historians even believes that he might have exaggerated the events of the war. So can't rule out the possibility that the historians who would've been loyal to their patron might've altered Alexander's defeat as a victory. An important thing is since most of the Alexander's army was made up of local rebel soldiers & mercenaries many of whom would not go back to Macedonia & speak of what had happened the Historians had all the scope to manipulate the things.

Once My Veterinary Parasitology teacher told me same that India's Victory of Alexander was a Lie.He told me that indian side had 300 archers who were so skilled that their arrows can penetrate whole elephant. And my another senior told me that Archer number was 3000 not 300. That time I did not believe my teacher and thought old man is just making his own assumptions. But now I practice archery on regular basis and come to know that around 1300-1400 AD Turkish army killed 20000 armoured French cavalry men with their bow only. Their bow poundage was 90-130 lb. And I also come to know that Guru Govind singh ji used to shoot 225kg(नौ टंकी, 1टंक=25Kg) kaman (bow). He arrow shot 8km and 12km on two different occasions which is well recorded in history. Was most feared Archer of his time. Now I believe my teacher that around 2223 year ago their might be those Archer who could yield such heavy bow which can penetrate whole elephant. If 300 those heavy bow Archer and 2700 of light bow Archer were at the battle. Not even demigods stand a chance against arrows of those Archer forget Alexander the no one.

Greek historians themselves say couple of things like it was the most hardest battle for Alexander he lost the most in this battle he ws injured his horse died. Meanwhile porus was merely a small chieftain not even a ruler of a kingdom let alone an empire. These clues are enough to point the fingers at truth about his army trying mutiny and him going back dropping the further plans moving toward east. Such a emperor Alexander abandoning his campaign and backing off is not just because of mutiny but the fact if a chieftain did so much to them what would nanda empire would do to them. He was smart he retired at correct time he did not waited to retire with a defeat.

Later when his army started fleeing the battlefield, he got an arrow into his lung that could not be treated by Greeks and he succummed to this injury. Sir, invasion of Alexander is mentioned by himself and also mentioned in ''pathitrupathu'' literature. This was clearly tells about the battle between the king imayavaramban cheran and alexander & Aryan. But the literature didn't mentioned name of any one of the kings including alexander but the literature mentioned the Greek people's,Aryans who helped the Greeks. He defeted 65 kings in India including aryans and kadamba and alexander. The word porus in Greek called as rock or powerful human something, during that time the Greek people's called the ''imayavaramban cheran'' as porus. The alexander also mentioned about him he looks like Hercules. And he was an tallest person also he command the elephant calvary. This all are mentioned in Patiṟṟuppattu. And he mention the name of his brother called malai kethu this is Tamil name, and he told he was the ruler of mountain region. In chera dynasty malai mean mountain. And during that period there is no elephant calvary in North India.His brother was dead in the battle her name is ''malai kethu'' and he killed the Alexander's horse called Bucephalus. And there is the myth about the alexander death. Some historical archeologists tells the alexander was killed in that battle. And some people's telling the war between alexander and porus eventually become the hard and the victory was most favor to porus. And finally the alexander arrange the comparamise meeting. However there is the record about this war in ''Patiṟṟuppattu''. ''Imayavaramban cheran'' was the greatest king in the world during that period. He gifted one strongest sword to alexander that was came from chera dynasty, there is lot evidence about that. And the literature was written in the same time period this is real. After 300 years death of Alexander , Persian people's wrote about alexander that is fake. And there is no clear evidence about the death of Alexander but he was dead during that period. And after that war he never return to his home town. Some people's telling he was dead when he was returning to his country. He never ruled his empire even single day. The reason of his death is, maybe he gets bad injuries in that battle this is the only way. But there is no clear evidence when he was died. Beacause he arrested some Greek war commanders and soldiers also Aryan soldiers and gives some punishment and put them all into the labors in his port and some sectors. This all are mentioned in ''Patiṟṟuppattu''. If the war was withdrawned or alexander won the battle he never allowed to arrest his soldiers. And he enter into india, that was never happened. So he was defeated by porus alice imayavaramban cheran. The victory of imayavaramban cheran is tells about his victory against Greek in Patiṟṟuppattu. After that war he conquered the himalayas and upto Tibet. There is the mountain called vaanavaraban in Tibet is called as vaanavaraban mountain still now. His real name is ''neduncheralathan'' after the victory over himalayas he was honored and named as imayavaramban. And victory over Tibet he named as vaanavaraban. And later the indo-greek, Aryans and kadamba took the war against the cheras to took revenge against the son of imayavaramban cheran called cheran senguttuvan. He is also the greatest king in the world during that period. But ''Cheran senguttuvan'' defeted the Greek, Aryan and kadamba in the single battle (and lot of indian kings during his invades over himalayas) and he is also put them all into the labors before giving some punishment. He conquered the himalayas couple of times and makes the victory of both time.

Hello Sir, I have a question reading Maharaja Porus. Many historians mention him to be from Paurava clan, but in Chanakya serial, Maharaja Puru is shown mentioned as "Kaikeyi Raj" why? After deep-digging into many articles and blogs, I was confused whether King Porus is a Shooraseni, a Pauravanshi, or a Katoch king. Please clarify that sir. And that there were too "Puru's" which i presume one is Porus - Purushottam and another one is Parvateshwara who joined hands with Chanakya, and later poisoned by a vishkanya ("according to Mudraraksasa"). Also, Porus tv show which telecasted in 2018 showed King Porus as "Dasyu" which i don't think could be true that his parents abadoned him and he came back to take the throne eventually. Lastly, Porus is deafeated by Alexander The Great. But, many people claim that Alexander was defeated by Porus's army and he was set-free by Porus. Thank You. @Abhijit Chavda

Your deduction is very correct. Alexander got a hard slap by getting seriously injured and had to run back. His trained horse got killed in the battle with King PURU called Porus. And yet the best evidence on the issue says otherwise. The battle is well documented and studied to this day by military acedemies of nations the world over, (most likely India's as well). But for some what the truth likely is simply doesn't matter. One topic I'd like to know more about is what India's dominant polytheism was like before being subjected to Islamic occupation for such a long time. Somehow I think we'd all be rather enlightened if we could see how things were before and after.

@@dj-ux1jr No agenda, friend, just posed a question that has interested me about India for some time, i.e. what India was like before the Mughals and earlier/later Islamic conquests. What effect did the Mughal Empire and other various Islamic forays into India have on the spirituality of the indigenous Indians they conquered? Your other reply treats the question rather cavalierly for the time in question. It's a fine, pragmatic answer for modern times, I'd agree. But for 13th to 17th century India? I'd have to say there's much that's been lost to history. Deliberately so or otherwise. Put simply: the indigenous Indians the Mughals & their fellow conquerors imposed themselves on, likely suffered a spiritual & cultural poverty the likes of which they'd never previously endured. Indigenous polytheistic India was one of the highest civilizations in the world. Even when the Mughals had imposed Sharia law they failed to convert the majority of the Indian population under it. Left alone, who knows what amazing destiny India would've made for themselves and what effect it may have had on the world.

@@George_D777 The Mughals basically destroyed the country. Before the Mughals era it was much better and many things unique about Indian history during that time was gone forever. Best guess for me in Alexanders retreat would be that his soldiers had enough fighting for years now and they feared facing bigger armies with war trained elephants. So yeah he basically chickened out. The battle between porus and Alexander was won marginally by Alexander just because he had more experience waging a war all thru these years.

I'm also curious about the similarities between Alexander and Lord Karthikeya. Alexander is called Sikander, and Lord Karthikeya is also Skanda, since both wielded spears in war. Alexander defeated the Persians, whose god was Ahura (some speculate the Vedic Asuras are actually the Persians), and Lord Karthikeya defeated the Asuras. Both were great conquerors, but never settled to rule their empire. Alexander, even though he was the King of Macedonia and Babylon, was affectionately called the Prince, just as Lord Karthikeya was called Kumaran (Tamil word for Prince). I'm deeply sorry if my comparison offended anyone. But this is my genuine curiosity.

Another important point is related to elephants and a well developed kingdom name Magadh. Alexander and his army never faced any rival that had trained elephants. They faced a very small army with no more than 200 elephants for the first time when they crossed Jhelum. His army was awestruck and even their horses were frightened. Even if he had won against Porus or whatever his actual name was, he would have had to face a large army of Magadh with more than 3000 war trained elephants and other army. Also at that time, king Dhananand was ruling who was known for his cruelty along with his hedonistic lifestyle. Alexander was smart and had even smarter advisory committee. They might have gauged their odds of losing and left for good. Apart from these, there could have been a lot of other issues like malaria, non-cooperative local people (Alexander had immense support of local people along his victorious conquest after the king's defeat or surrender which was difficult in India), and at the last the vegetarian life style of India (even if they were to loot local villages, they were not going to find enough meat to feed their army).

What about the reference to Alexander in the Chanakya stories where we see him trying to unite Indian kings against Alexander ?

Alexander got into an alliance with Ambi who was rulinng over Afghanistan at that time as Ambi had his eyes on Purus's kingdom. When the battle was over, Puru ended up adding Ambis kingdom to his. Apparently this was a part of the cease fire agreement Alexander signed for safe return.
@MorallyDubiousFrog Жыл бұрын
Ambi didn’t have his eyes on Porus’ kingdom, and Porus didn’t get Ambhi’s kingdom. Porus surrendered after the battle and became Alexander’s satrap.

Alexander III of Macedon defeated Porus at the Battle of the Hydaspes and that's a historical fact...
@stevenleslie85572 жыл бұрын
I understand that his soldiers were concerned that the next Indian army they would face would be massive. They probably took heavy losses against Porus and were not at full strength. Also, I'm surprised that nothing is written about Alexander in Indian sources. Surely, they knew he was heading their way and had pause for concern?

The two theories are not mutually exclusive. He could have prevailed against Porus who could be a minor chieftain. His veterans, older now and far away from home were scared of elephants and rumours of much bigger Indian kingdoms and so he had to turn back. The route he took does not suggest he suffered a loss, probably a costly victory.

Over simplification of things to suit your convenience is not correct. Most of the ancient texts were burned down by foreign invaders like Khilji and others. So, King Porus's name is also not found anywhere in Indian ancient literature. However, Chanakya was well aware of Alexander's forays or plans, for which he went Magadha to warn King Nanda, but he was banished from there. So, wise men like him understood the importance of building strong defense or security for India's prosperity. There may be some people back then who didnot take Greeks seriously like some fools, who also did not considered the British worthy or looked down upon earlier until the Battle of Plassey happened. So, we need to look at the holistic picture before passing judgement.

Urdu does have Sanskrit-derived words, Urdu is a mix of Arabic/Persian/Hindustani words. Furthermore, you find numerous words in Indo-European languages beginning with "st", all being related and denoting something fixed, firm, stable (sic), standing (sic) etc. Also think of Hindi "stambh" for ex. In Thai, which has many Pali-derived words, sthan becomes "sathan", a "sathani" is a station (railway, bus etc.).
