Beautifully sung, very pleasant to hear, and quite enjoyable. But I know that this Varnam would have sounded much more pleasant and soothing had Sri Raghuraman sung it at a slower kaalapramaana. At a slower tempo, the raaga bhaava of Nattakurinji comes through in abundance. Nattakurinji Raaga Devathaa is one of the very few Raaga Devathaas of Carnatic Music who are not only bewitchingly beautiful, but who also have the rarest quality known as LaavaNya. Lavanya is a combination of ethereal, voluptuous beauty, grace and charm. That is why Bharathanatyam dancers are very fond of dancing to this raga, because it allows them to exhibit and express their laavanya (if they have any!). Nattakurinji is a Ubhaya Vakra raaga (it is vakra in both arohana and avarohana, and so it has some very special intrinsic charm due to the twists and turns its prayogas so easily take). The mesmerising raaga bhaava of Nattakurinji is revealed completely only when it is sung at slow tempo, the same way the raaga bhaava of the super melodious Bhairavi is revealed completely only when sung at slow tempo, with lavish gamacas (Think of Shree Deekshitar's Balagopala and Shree Shyama Shastri's Swarajati Amba Kaamakshi.) I have heard Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Nedunuri Krishnamurthy singing this Varnam at a much slower tempo, with great bhaava. At higher speeds, the Law of Diminishing returns comes into play: The faster one sings, the lesser the bhaava expressed. I have attended more than a dozen concerts of Sri Abhishek Raghuraman, and I know that he is quite capable of singing with great bhaava: His concert at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan some time ago touched me deeply because he sang most of the krithis at slower tempo and with bhaava. But I have also observed that he feels most comfortable and at ease when ever he sings at a fast tempo. In some respects, singing on Carnatic stage is like driving a car on a highway. Some drivers are comfortable only when they are in the fast lane, and if they happen to be in a slow lane, they try to move to the fast lane at the earliest opportunity. I have taken so much time to write this very long comment only because I have seen many ideal qualities in his singing: He has excellent swara jnana and Sangeetha Jnana, and he has learnt from very good Sangeetha Acharyas, he has extraordinary Laya Jnana (He has learnt to play mridangam, and I think he has a built-in mridangam in his mind), and excellent Sruthi Shuddha and, equally important, a very pleasant, soothing voice. Instead of exciting the rasicas' mind by singing very fast (yes, I know that it invariably results in huge applause from the rasicas), if he sings in such a way as to soothe the rasicas' mind (the way Shree T M Krishna does, for example), he will soar even higher in the Carnatic Sky. He is young now, and my hope is that as time passes, with more maturity, a time will soon come when it dawns on him that singing with bhakthi and bhaava is paramount in Carnatic Music. As our great Sangeetha Pitamaha, Sri Purandara Dasa, has said in some of his kritis, singing with bhakthi is essential for enlightening the minds if the rasikas. Yesh Prabhu, Mylapore, Chennai
