Marco and Floor are a fantastic duet. Marco has said that when singing duets with Tarja and Annette he felt like he had to hold back so he didn't overpower them but with Floor he could sing at full strength.

Plenty of Nightwish songs have both Floor & Marko going back and forth (Romanticide, Ghost River, Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean, etc).

@@Abigirl_Reacts also, Marco is the lead singer in his own band that he and his brother created back in 1982 and was still going strong even while he was with Nightwish.. it was a metal band called Tarot. I don't know that you would call Marco a back up singer... I like how tedkord1968 put it as "co-leads" but I'm not sure that's accurate, as this band is self described as having a "female lead singer", and not "co-leads". But Marco does do more than just "back-up" singing

@@Abigirl_Reacts It's interesting to listen to Floor and Marko sing together outside of Nightwish. Low down Marko has the power edge, but as they go higher Floor easily sings over him. Here in "Ever Dream" I have the feeling that the issue was in the mix. That said, Floor will deliberately back off to give Marko the lead on some songs. She is very much a team player. In "Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red" at Wembley she sat on the drum riser, in the dark, in silence, until it was time for her to supply the backing vocals. Very few lead singers will sing backing vocals for the backing vocalist. Floor will.

And a song they never did live on stage, a dis-track towards Tarja's manager and husband, who had probably the biggest part in the divorce of Nightwish from their founding member and lead vocalist, called "Master Passion Greed" and yes Tuomas was very angry when he wrote that song...which Marko did alone without any female back-up

If you want to hear Marko sing alone, then react to Nightwish - High Hopes . It's a Pink Floyd Tribute. Marko is not a backround singer, if he sings along with Floor then he sings WITH Floor. His micro is perfectly adjusted. He's the icing on the cake in this song. You have to get out of your pigeonholing a bit. Just because Floor has the title mainsinger and sings most of the songs, it doesn't mean that a second singer belongs in the backround. When Marko sings along, it's a duet and both complement each other equally.

The blonde girl you noted who was sitting on her boyfriend's shoulders.... Did you notice the second time she appears, they had a shot of Empuu doing one of his signature tosses of a guitar pick out into the crowd. Then the editors immediately cut to that girl with her mouth wide open so that your brain automatically insert the (non-existent) visual of her catching the guitar pick like a tossed piece of popcorn! I love that shot. All throughout this concert, the editors play some fun games with the edits. Like the now-famous "time traveller" guy in Storytime! LOL.

I would recommend the Wembly live version of Greatedt Show on Earth, as the sound is much better in that video, especially Floor’s vocals. People like the Tampere version because of the fireworks, which personally I feel distract from the song audio.

Actually, it's the high belting part that's difficult, not from the ability standpoint, but rather that she didn't want it to sound too thin. If she just went all head voice (like Tarja did with this song), then it would just be a cruise for her.

There are no mistakes made in this song, Marko joined at the end as designed to support her voice as that sounds better. And remember: this is tight, live and without auto-tune/pitch correction. What artists nowadays can/will do this? Not Celine Dion, not Taylor Swift.

Agree with this comment. I think the musical idea is for the voices to take over from each other and blend shortly. I personally think it works great and untill this day, I haven't even thought about him beeing to loud. I do see Abis point, though - but I just don't can't see them achieving the same musical idea with him comming in softer. He shouldn't in my opinion come across as merely a backup singer or something like that. He is shortly the lead singer and/or they share that spot briefly. Therefore he needs to be as powerfull as he is, in my view. But it's interresting to nerd-discuss this specific element, having listened to the song many times and seen a ton of reactions 🙂

Oh don't get me wrong though, Marko is an incredible singer! I don't necessarily view him as just s back up singer or think he needs to be soft overall. I simply don't think he should be louder than Floor since she sang 95% of this song so I consider her the lead.

@@Abigirl_Reacts It bothered you so much that you felt like it's worth pointing out. Do you think you can get used to it so that it doesn't pop up in your mind any more as being "wrong"? We all are different and consider things differently - and that is good. That's actually how we improve. Those guys mixing the music have done a good job. I wonder how much they can do in post production. It probably depends on how many tracks they record separately. But for the live event they must have different settings pretty much for every song, I suppose. Or even within a song certain instruments are taken up, like chimes. In the Pink Floyd tribute "High Hopes" (End of an Era) Marko proves, that he definitely is not just a back up singer 🙂

You are completely right. Marco Hietala has a very powerfull voice, and is a great singer, just like Floor, but who sounds "louder" in what you hear in your headphone is mainly the result of choices made by the mixing engineers.

Marko Hietala, bass/male vocals, has a long and distinguished history dating back before Nightwish. He is well known and loved in Finland as one of the pioneers of metal there. And Finland, by the way, has more metal bands per capita than any other country in the world. Marko (legal name, Marco, stage name no longer used though he has said he doesn't care which spelling is used) can be heard taking the lead in some Nightwish songs, and his duets with Floor are spectacular. If you really want to hear what Marko can do, take a listen to Nightwish's tribute to Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" from the End of an Era DVD. Then, listen to "The Islander" live at Tampere. He is such a versatile singer. In this song, and in others, I love the contrast between the two voices. But, that's a matter of personal taste, and I certainly respect yours.

With regard to audiences clapping and throwing the timing off: Most of the time these days, major bands performing live use in-ear monitors in order to remain on pitch and in sync. Floor is hearing the drummer in her ears and sings to his tempo, not stage monitors or PA speakers. Also, and especially when playing with an accompanying orchestral track (i.e. Ghost Love Score) there is a "click track" mixed with the in-ear audio, sounding like an electronic metronome, to help everyone maintain tempo with the pre-recorded orchestra, since the orchestra's tempo cannot vary.

You noted some interesting things! The first one is the unsynchronized clapping. Just deal with it. Sound travels at about 340 meters per second, depending on many extraneous variables. In a venue as large as Wacken, this means that people more to the back are going to be hearing the clapping/the beat later than the people in the front, and if you are at the back and you take the acoustic cue you are going to be way too late, both visually and acoustically. The best way is to take your clapping cues visually, because light travels nearly a million times faster than sound. That way the clapping is visually synchronized, but the sound is not. For the people more to the back, they would have to clap before hearing the downbeat, which is actually hard to do because different parts of the brain are involved and most people overestimate their multitasking abilities. And the positioning of the audience reaction mikes is another factor influencing the final sound. Floor would probably not hear the acoustics because of her in-ears. The second one is in the balance between the voices of Floor and Marko. As I remember Everdream, it is basically a duet with more female front time so an equality in their volumes is ok with me. Now bear with me, what you are hearing is not what the audience at Wacken was hearing. All the different audio sources are sent to a mixing desk where the mixing decisions are made in real time. For a live DVD, all the individual audio streams are preserved, and remixed with video as the director intends. As a matter of fact, Marko usually involves himself with the audio part and he tends to make his voice and his bass sound great. Very human of course! Good job! Love to see more from you!

Although it's a live performance. This concert was recorded on Blu-ray. So, you are reacting to a song from the Blu-ray that has been mixed. People keep steering reactors to Wacken 2013 because it is said to be a perfect mix. I agree. I have never thought about the volume of Marko's voice and if it appears a little louder in this song then it's nice for him to get a little of the limelight. When they actually harmonize in songs it's marvelous. 😄🤘

Floor is main face as vocalist, but not the only one. Marko has many duets with her and he is an actual legend in European metal scene, he has endless colabs with other bands since his 80s power voice complements so many needs. Try hearing Bye Bye Beautiful music video, Phantom of the Opera from 2005 or Wish I had an Angel from this concert, for full power. Or an absolute blasphemy The Islander, where Marko is main vocalist and Floor is backup with lower mic.

I totally agree with your comment about the crowd clapping, as a performer myself it is difficult to, but if you look closely at Floor and the rest of the band, they are all wearing in ear monitors, for that reason I think, plus I think they use click tracks for the orchestration as that is usually recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra. I never think of Marko as a backup vocalist. He is a powerful lead singer in his own right and in his own bands. He just doesn't sing as much in Nightwish. For me I get the chills whenever he comes in to give us his little treats of vocal goodies! He is also one of the few people that can say HE has had Floor as a backup vocalist haha! When you get a chance watch the 7 Days to the Wolves in wembley. An extremely well done duet/harmonies by Marko and Floor. One of their best bangers in my opinion. Cheers!

The song was initially written for an operatic voice (Tarja). But it seems that classical singing is not much appreciated by Tuomas after he kicked her out of the band in 2005. Maybe that’s why Floor was belting it here. It would obviously have been much easier for her if she just dropped her larynx - and it would definitely not have sounded any worse because her head voice is gorgeous. I wish we’d hear it more in Nightwish, but alas. Totally agree with you that the backing vocalist should not overshadow the main one, although he has no doubt got quite a set of lungs on him.👍

Marko is one of the best singers in the world...having yhesec2 singers at the same time on stage isn't fair to all of the other bands....listen to him and Tarja sing The Phantom of the Opera live. It's the best version of that song ever. Marko has said that Floor is the only singer that he can't overpower. He really is a beast. They both growl by the way. The 2 of them are vocal monsters.

I think that Marko's tone was deliberate to give that shock effect. Check out Romanticide and Song Of Myself to see how they can blend. The Blond girl you pointed out, I think she is the one that was sat on someone's shoulders for the whole concert. Kudos for the guy who has the strength to do that and how did he see any of the concert himself. You noticed she had a ring but I'm not sure when she married Hannes van Dahl. Does anyone know whether she was married to him at the time of the Wacken show??

@@Abigirl_Reacts Floor & Hannes first met during a tour in 2014. Floor was already with NW but also still in her own band ReVamp. Hannes was/is Sabaton's drummer and both bands were support acts for Iced Earth. After the April 4th show at Grand Rapids, they sat down with some whisky, shared a cigar and their love for bands like Pantera. That's when Hannes decided he just had to marry her. In short: at Wacken 2013 she wasn't.

If you eventually watch the entire concert (well worth it!) You will notice a young lady in the front row with ear plugs with a huge smile singing along to every song. She knows all the words, and looks like she is having the time of her life! Pretty sure she is shown at the beginning of Romanticide doing the traditional tongue out rocking out gesture. 😄🤘🏼

Great reaction Abi👍👍 Where much music (metal or other) can tend to be formulatic (guitar riffs and drum solos) Nightwish is anything but. Everyone does what is needed without having to be the “star”. Floor may be the front person and perceived as the star but she totally realizes and appreciates that it is the presence of all of them performing together at the very highest level that creates the Nightwish vibe and excellence. The juxtaposition of her insane range and presence and this bands hard hitting insane talent is incredible Absolutely kickass. 🤘🤘 (Shout out to Jukka in “Beast Mode” on the drum kit…….as usual🤘)

That voice was Marko! Long white hair and beard - Marko Hietala. Marko recently said that the "Marco" spelling he used for Nightwish was the last lie that he told to himself. He was born with the K spelling and has gone back to it. K for King! Floor only said "start" a little softer... when you see Jukka tighten his bandana you know things are gonna get real pretty fast! Ever Dream is a demanding song, and Floor has said she had to save some of the power for the rest of the evening. Maybe Marko sing a bit too loud of his part on this song, but in many other songs, they fit perfectly. You are the first one to mention this, but you might be right 🙂

This concert was from 2013 and in 2020 ( I believe ) Marco left the band for personal reasons, and is now playing with his own band! I love listening to his band, as they have a definite Led Zeppline vibe to his own music...which I love! Hey...I am 67 years old and Marco is in his late 50's, so a little bit of Led Zeppeline's style is normal! Check out Marcos song, " Left On Mars" featuring Tarja...Night wishes first lead singer.

I think about Markos voice and the clapping have others said already all, just a few thoughts fom me. I think when you watch live performances with Tarja you will notice that she performs as a lead singer and the band is just accompaning her, Floor is part of the band. It may also have to do with her replacing Anette midtour, as Tuomas said the band was in survival mode at that time. As for the clapping, watch Blind Guardian The Bards Song and Valhalla at Wacken 2016. The first part is only acoustic guitars and singing, with some crazy meter changes within. So the crowd gets totally lost but the guitars are always on time. I think you have only reacted to live versions from Wacken 2013 so far, keep in mind that all of the songs there were written for the two first singers, so when you think her voice cannot surprise you any more, wait til you hear Yours Is An Empty Hope.

I totally agree that the audience is always off. I play drums and hate it. When ever I'm in the audience I can't clap because all others are all over the place. In the studio version Marko's voice is way too low but I love it in this mix. He does not overrule Floor. They complement each other perfectly in this mix. And in maaany other live songs.

You'll see Marco also spelled Marko. Marco is the legal spelling of his name but he has also used Marko as a stage name. I think he stopped using Marko and just uses the legal spelling now. I just thought I'd mention because I see both spellings in the comments.

I don't think Floor is bothered by clapping audience. She has earbuds in and she usually only links in with the sound of the drum and the base in her ears. The rest she knows by heart. To put it consise, she does not hear the audience, and she does not hear half of the band. At least that is what she said in an interview. She is very precise with the volume of the earbuds in relation to her own singing. You will see her correcting them physically and electronically multiple times during a concert. Fun fact, the guitar player (Empuu) once disconnected her earbuds during a concert leaving Floor helpless. She took revenge the next concert by putting apple juice in his Corona beer bottle that he drinks during the concerts (he hates apple juice).

The guy singing with Floor is Marco, who is playing bass guitar and is also doing vocals. Sadly he has left the band (understandable reasons, so no drama here) and now Troy (the multi-instrumentalist, playing Flutes, bagpipes and so on) is doing more vocal stuff. In Lanternlight for example, Troy is singing the male parts in the second half of the song. I have to admit, as i first heard the song, i felt a bit like you, thinking that he was a bit too loud compared to Floor. This feeling was also enhanced by the fact that in 08:50 she seemed to give him a look, saying "keep back a little, you are too loud". Because of that, i did not fell in love with "Everdream" immediately. However, after listening to many other songs with them singing together and getting used to Marko's voice and also knowing that he is basically a second singer and not your typical background singer, this song has now become one of my favourites.

After you've gone through enough Nightwish songs, you'll hear Floor and Marko trading places as to who is dominating the phrase. It's just something they do. Floor is holding back a bit here in the middle of the song. As we approach the end, she begins to ramp it up. In some songs when they sing together, we barely hear Marko. It just depends on the song. Also their mic levels could be managed as well. Nightwish uses Pro Tools and all of the backing tracks, lighting and pyro are pre-programmed. I don't know enough about Pro Tools to know that a 2013 version could manage mic levels as well. It all could be pre-programmed that their mic levels are adjusted as to who is supposed to be lead.

I am not a Pro Tools expert, nor do I know anything about the 2013 version of the software. But here's my best guess. With Pro Tools you can record every incoming source (voice mike, instrument preamp line out, etc.) individually as a separate discreet track - essentially a board mix. Once you get the file back to the studio, you can digitally remix the raw source file, along with any post-processing needed to clean/clarify/balance the mix, to create release-ready material, . Make no mistake, Nightwish is an extremely good live band, I've heard them live three times. But they do sound better on released live recordings than actually live. Room acoustics almost always require compensation, even when recording outdoors.

Oh OK although I feel like even in the end when Floor was belting at her max, Marco still overpowered her. He's got some great pipes that's for sure, I just wanted his volume just a tad lower than Floor or Floor a tad louder since she sang the majority of the song.

@@tcish4708 Ya, I think that's important to emphasize that the mix for the DVD is not the same as the mix going to the soundboard and out the PA. The FOH will set up the levels for the venue, which will likely produce a poor DVD result. With each track recorded individually the band can optimize the mix for the DVD so they can play with the mic levels if they wished. I think it's important to state that Nightwish is on the record saying that they don't do any more than mixing and mastering with the live performance DVDs. They leave the mistakes and the rough spots in the DVDs.

They have in-ears, so they hear only what comes through the audio they choose to hear. They hear the croud only through the mics if turned to the croud. So in this case the croud clapping probably doesn't have affect on singing. This uis what I have heard of this.

Just remember, Nightwish is a BAND, not made for one. And everything in the performance happens for the reason. Floor is great singer, and she fits with Nightwish better than anyone else. At some point in this concert I think Floor ask sound guy to gain her microphone a bit.

Due to physics it is impossible for a large crowd to clap in time. The speed of sound is just too low. On a large field like this you can actually see the soundwaves going through the crowd. However with good in-ear monitors the bandmembers only hear their personalized click track and their own voice/instruments and when required 1 or 2 band members. With NW this clicktrack also provides the audiostream of the prerecorded orchestra, choir and it provides cues to to the lighting and pyro engineers. Once the clicktrack starts the entire stage is directed to the microsecond. No-one can deviate from the clicktrack.

I subscribed but only watch reaction videos of a handful of Wacken 2013 performances and Floor's solo stuff.....Amsterdam Live 2021, Beste Zanger's show, Floor's cover songs, and the Disdain performance with Revamp in 2010 at Graspop. Also, some Marko stuff, especially Pink Floyd's High Hope's and a few others.

I do like the whole band though. Just because i don't think Marco should be louder than Floor doesn't mean I don't like him. I think I complimented him a bunch of times! Marko's parts are fairly brief in this song and I don't find they overpower Floor at all - Marko is more than an accompaniment, he's a fabulous singer in his own right, it's just that in many of the songs, the parts written for him are not as long. It would be a bit odd for those brief parts to be low in the mix - they've clearly made a choice to mix it in that way (Nightwish is very deliberate (in a good way) with their soundscapes) and it's probably done that way to build the emotional response they're looking to project.
