I had no idea this was an actual story. A guest storyteller told a version of it way back when I was in like the 1st grade. It’s wild hearing it again after all these years.

I like how these people are completely unfazed by floating heads gold or not. If I’m sitting on a bank and a golden severed head pops out of the water, I’m screaming and running for the hills haha

My brothers must think I'm crazy. As I'm painting I keep singing the heads' song to myself, it's so catchy X3 Ooh! Since you love stories about cats, I have two I recommend: One is called The Colony of Cats and the other is Kisa the Cat. Both are in a couple of Andrew Lang's Colored Fairy Books! The former is actually quite funny and has a bit of a Cinderella-esque deal with the protagonist and her sister.

Honestly if I saw a head popping in the water I would have screamed. 😂 Also I had a creepy thought. The third head said she'd marry the greatest king that rains. What if the greatest king that rained ended up being her father?😱 That would have been creepy!

Read a version of this in Joseph Jacob's tale in which the song was Slightly different and not much fluff. What the princesses got are slightly different as they slept. The good princess was made to smell nice and look nice and marry the richest king. The mean princess was given bad oder and ugly sores and had to marry a poor cobbler after he treated her condition. This cobber wasn't so eager as he was just a kind hearted person and the princess also became a reformed person as they naturally fell in love. Oh and the Queen died of embarrassment rather than rage

This must be a very, very old tale. "Wyrd" (weird, in our modern English) used to mean "fate"; hence, the Werid Sisters in Shakespeare's MacBeth are the Three Fates. I can't remember the etymological timeframe exactly, but if the heads are talking about wyrding the Princess with kind fates, it must be a very old tale indeed.

No I'm headcanoning that both marriages are happy bc the heads said she'd be happy to marry him and when she agreed to marry him it was reluctance at best.

Have you ever played Fran Bow? I feel like it would be right down your alley. It's about a little girl named Fran who has to escape a mental asylum to find her kitty and her parents killer. She goes on a fantastical journey as she encounters creatures from different realities both intriguing, charming, and horrifying. There are many puzzles, mysteries, and tasks in this horror side scroller game. It's still one of my favorite games to this day

I liked the ugly princess quite a lot lmao. I imagine that she married the cobbler who helped her and fell in love with him gradually while living a humble country life. Well ugly princesses don’t always have to have an unhappy ending….

@grumpykiki... On my first listen, I felt a bit as you do, but she's grown on me... a lovely soothing voice, and a personal touch of the asides sprinkled in. (Often the comments are just saying out loud thoughts that pop into mind while listening to the story.) All together it's like a relaxing visit with a friend after a long harried day.
