Abiu, yellow sapote or Pouteria caimito, is a rare tropical fruit tree that originates from South America. The tree can reach up to 30 feet in height and bears a round or oval-shaped fruit that is yellow or orange in color. The flesh of the fruit is sweet and creamy, with a texture resembling that of a custard. Additionally, it is high in Vitamin C and other essential nutrients.
The abiu tree is relatively easy to cultivate and thrives in warm and humid environments. It requires ample water and sunlight. The tree is also tolerant of high winds and salt spray. It is typically propagated by seed, but can also be propagated through cuttings or grafting.
The fruit of the abiu tree is typically ready for harvest after around 6 to 8 months from flowering. The fruit is harvested when it is fully ripe and has turned yellow or orange in color. The fruit is typically consumed fresh, but can also be used to make jams, jellies, and desserts.
The abiu tree is not widely cultivated outside of its native range but has been introduced to other tropical regions such as Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. The tree is often grown as a backyard tree or in small orchards. In some regions, it is considered a traditional crop with deep cultural significance.
The abiu tree is also known for its medicinal properties. The leaves, bark, and fruit have been traditionally used to treat a variety of ailments. For example, the leaves have been used to treat diabetes and the bark has been used to treat fevers and other illnesses.

Aloha! Great video! I have 2 Abiu in my yard. I have had one flower, but no fruit, do you have any idea what could be causing my flowers to fall? I Live on the east side of the Big Island and get plenty of water and sunshine. Loads of bees, I have fertilized and put down plenty of mulch. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated! Mahalo!

Aloha Janette! How old are the trees? And are you saying that only one has flowered so far? Often times (in my experience) they flower once or twice before the fruit production starts. So that could be an indicator that you're close! They also prefer to cross polinate, so if there is nobody close to you growing Abiu, you may not be getting pollination. Tell me more about your situation and maybe we can figure something out!

The one that is flowering is about 4 or 5 years old. The second one is only like 2 years old. The older one has flowered multiple times with no fruit. I need to wait for the other one to mature for cross pollination it sounds like. Thank you so much for your response! Aloha!

@@jeanetteoliveira9501 They are self fertilizing, but they aren't very good at it. That's why it's recommended to have at least two, but not technically necessary. If it's 4 or 5 years old it should be ready to fruit! Mulch, water, sun, and food is all I can say! Best of luck and Mahalo for watching!😄🤙

I can see it not making the top ten, but fifty? What do you think the top ten is?

@@TheIslandHomestead definetly bottom of the 50. And that's not an insult actually. There are so many fruits to try with much better taste. I enjoy the abiu I had recently in Puerto Rico but it's not top of the flavor list at all. Cherimoya, rollinia, mango, durian, wax jambu apple, Garcinia/achacha, mangosteen, sapodilla, I can go on and on. Abiu would compete with the jelly fruits like rambutan and star apple (Jamaican name). I personally enjoyed the giant abiu very much and am currently growing some from the fruit I had recently. So that means I enjoyed it if I'm willing to grow and plant it. I have to wait 3 or 4 years if it survives to get fruit though.

@@TheIslandHomestead my personal top ten (regional to Florida/carribean) are:Cherimoya, rollinia, mango(many varieties), durian, wax jambu apple, Garcinia/achacha, mangosteen, sapodilla(when it has brown sugar with caramel taste), soursop, jaboticaba. My personal #1 is Rollinia. Mango can move up and down the list depending on the variety.

@nesq4104 I also love Anonas, Garcinias and Plinias. I'd definitely put Rollinia, Achacha, and Jaboticaba in my top ten.

@nesq4104 i have a giant Abiu tree as well. It's not in the ground yet, but it's flowering in the pot, so I'm sure it will fruit when I get it in the ground. I have Mountain Apple also (the Hawaiian wax jambu), and it's my wifes favorite fruit. Have you had a pulisan? That's my favorite of all the nephilim. There are some amazing artocarpus fruits as well, like marang.
