Wow. Figuring out you could leave the disc controller slightly unset so as to keep the bars from binding the core then constructing your tensioner so it left the controller lag was genius. Clearly you've got educated fingers skilled at picking up feedback as well. Wow, wow and um.... Wow!

Thanks! The tool could have gone better, thought I was going to have to start again but managed to rescue it and just about works. Still not an easy pick; it's easy enough to feel whether a gate is wide or narrow but the wide ones don't bind much at all. Add in the fact I only got two way rotation over half the range and many attempts follow

It's still a good keying mechanism. Disc detainer vs. pins, types, and side pins, and gates, is a lengthy discussion. One defeat of disc system is Kwi---t: an uncut key with good torque applied will tear right through the discs; the same would be true, probably, of any key material stronger than the discs.

Yes, in the real world a destructive attack is way more likely. I think maybe 10 or so people have picked Protec now, but picking is not really a practical real world approach to opening one of these. Too hard, too slow

This video is underrated. How to pick a lock? Interaction-by-interaction. It's a matter of applying aspects of the scientific method: observation, research, experimentation, repeat. And, sorry, it's not fast but, rather, methodical.

@@crispix PTs meaning Protec2? I think once you push the active element in the DC you should be away. If you can pick a Protec 1 you clearly have the skills to pull it off. As far as I know the padlocks open in one direction only and have the dolphin discs as you pointed out here. The cylinders can be turned CW CCW and have the balls that come into play on the key. Sorry the 0.4mm are temporarily out of stock I will get a batch finished ASAP 👍 great job making the picking tips for Ian's DD pick 👍

@@andy123law PT as in pin tumbler. I got really into discs about a year ago and neglected pins mostly, so my skills are somewhat, erm, intermediate! P2 harder to tension than original; there is an established method which I think Hux developed but it needs very good tools which I'd probably have to buy. Got an alternative plan which is less elegant and more fiddly but easier for someone like me to make without machine tools. We'll have to see if I can make it work!

I don't think any of the techniques I used here are new, they were developed by Huxleypig and idanhurja, but I think I have been much more open with the detail than either of them. Hopefully more people will try to pick these amazing locks.

14:35 Since Manfrotto Magic Arm does exist, I think it's safe to assume that you can keep the lock in stable orientation on the field, too.

Great explanation of the technique you use! If you modified the first profile disk to be free spinning (which I think would still allow the lock to be operated with the original key), how could you tension the lock then? With protec2 you can use the interactive element bearing balls to catch the core but this doesn't have such parts.

It would be harder for sure. I would have to experiment, but I think it might be possible to tension off the dolphins in the same way tare uses the BBs on p2. Obviously I've not tried though!

Good work, again! With near-nano-size manufacturing, sensors, and such, we must be 'close' to an auto-mechanical 'key,' much like the safe-dialer robots. You could walk down a hallway of Protec(2) doors, unlocking and opening one after another!

Ah, thanks man! I would love a go at one of those Bowley's. Sadly they are quite expensive and I think the tools to get one open would need access to a laser cutting machine. Maybe one day!

I'll ask a possibly stupid question, but what is the possibility that this type of lock will be opened by an ordinary thief in the door? Or will it be very difficult for a thief?

Not a stupid question. The chance of a lock like this being picked in use is basically zero. It is really hard to pick, and requires highly specialised tools and skills. Picking is generally unreliable, and the pick I filmed here took several hours of practice on this one lock. Unless you are trying to keep out a government agency with a reason to want covert entry, by far and away the most likely attack is destructive.

@@spelunkernz6390 needle files and Dremel. No magnifier but I wish I had one! Might invest. Tip started life as an ejector pin, 1.5mm shaft. If you're getting in to DD pick making worth getting some of these and some with 1mm shaft from AliExpress. Takes a while to come but lasts ages too. Might get one of those Bowley's done time but they do look really, really hard

The stock pick comes with tips for front tension, a bit like a better version of the Sparrows disc picks, but of course if you want to open a Protec you'll need to make new tips as I have here

You will need extremely high levels of concentration to pick this lock, listening to me being softly spoken is comparatively easy. If you want entertainment there's lots of channels for that. I make reference material to help people along. If you don't like it or it's not useful, don't watch.

Nice tool, however, you know the cuts of the working key. I doubt you could do this to a core you didn't know the cuts and weren't able to have sitting nicely on your work station.

Yes, you are quite right and I explicitly say exactly this in the video. A blind pick is definitely possible (I do get actionable feedback picking like this), but undoubtedly harder, and the awkwardness that would come with picking in situ would add further difficulty. Overall I would say that picking like this is definitely possible but not very practical, these are very hard indeed to pick.

Anyone who thinks watching this is going to get them into one of these locks is wasting their time. This is incredibly difficult to pick, and my demo here is the end result of hours of practice on this lock, backed up by hundreds of hours of practice on other locks. No thief is going to bother with this, they'll use an angle grinder, which is very reliable, quick and requires zero skill
