Many of these brave souls have also been instrumental in freeing my country of The Netherlands. Every year on May 4th we continue to honor them. A mere “thank you” does not envold the amount of our gratitude!

Beautiful and humbling place. I had the honor of lowering the flag the day I visited in 2017. It will forever remind me of those who have sacrificed all.

I visited here on a cold, drizzly March afternoon some 20 years ago. I and another American from Chicago, were the only ones there. At closing time, we were approached by a park employee, who asked if we were Americans. After replying Yes, he then asked if we would like to take down the two large American flags at the head of the cemetery. I remember it like it was yesterday. What an extreme honor!

Corporal Albert Lewis Vandersee was originally from Monroe, Oregon. He attended high school at Philomath High School Class of 1939. He was killed on Christmas Day 1944 gallantly defending the city of Bastogne, Belgium while serving in the 101st Airborne Division - the Screaming Eagles. He is buried here in Luxembourg. His Gold Star Mother was Mrs May Vandersee. She had a memorial marker honoring her son placed at the Monroe Cemetery back in Oregon so he would never be forgotten. There is nothing stronger than a mother’s love. Your son is not forgotten Mrs Vandersee. We remember his ultimate sacrifice 80 years ago.

Imagine if you would, an American President declining the opportunity to visit such a hallowed place to briefly honor the men and women buried there.

I wonder who has the original burial records of these American cemeteries prior to some of these soldiers being disinterred in 1949 and returned to the United States for reburial.
