Abnormal muscle synergy patterns is a normal part in the stages of motor recovery. However, if left to persist for to long, they can interfere with the later stages in movement recovery. In this video I will talk about what this means and give easy exercises to help correct this movement problem following a stroke or brain injury. This can also happen in someone who has brain damage due to multiple sclerosis.

19MAY22: I suffered in 2015 a stroke I am 7 years into my recovery. I do not have my affected arm moving yet. Everthing else do to odd energy : I take apple cidervinega (ACV) in water in the morning. This helps clear out dead cells. The remaining two meals I do the same but use liquid amino acid. This helps build new cells. All odd energy movements reduced or went away. My balance returned and my walking improved.

Hi Dr. Tobias, Thank you so much for your videos. Both of my parents have had strokes in the last 6 months and I have been using your channel as my number one resource. May I ask a question? For the exercise that isolates elbow extension (at 8:26) would that be appropriate to do with someone who often has involuntary movement that causes elbow flexion. Would that make it worse?

Hi there Elena, I've been learning a lot since my recovery started. Wrist spasticity is very bad which restricts the finger movements. Plus it causes a deformity that is pretty common in stroke. Its ,As she says wrist turns downwards (flexionand in some cases wrist stays in abduction.( sideways tilt forming a curve in wrist. I'm sure your therapist might help on this with proper stretching

I just started setting with a 65-year-old stroke man. He can use his right arm very little and it basically stays at his side. He can use his right hand to feed himself but it takes quite a while and it is quite a struggle. He cannot lift his right arm straight up above his head. I am wondering what would be the first simple steps to help him with his right arm? He doesn’t talk a lot but he does understand and does what I ask him to with his hands as best he can. I so want to help him get better. I’ve listened to this video but after you said to isolates a hand and elbow, I thought I better ask the first specific stab. I was just having him open his hands and grip then open again, thinking that would help him with his use of his hand when eating. I’ve been listening to all your videos and they are so very helpful. Thank you for any guidance you might share.

I have been injured on a jobsite within the last year and despite my stroke a week later it wasn’t until May (5 months total) and the full open brain surgery took full effect and started from scratch. It has been a long and slow process but I am on the mend and you videos are a lifesaver. Thank you so much for putting your video’s out there to see and share, it is a very big process for you to put them out there and I wanted to thank you personally.
