Ive only seen clips of this show but i really like the idea that all these people from different countries are uniting, sharing humor, discussing stuff with opinions from different perspectives. I've always had foreign friends growing up (n grew up in 2 cultures as well) so it's really nice there is a show like this, i wish more people could get along with foreigners like this without hating them purely based on history or politics

Yep! But he certainly didn't struggle either (unlike what the title claims). If he did, he would have had to pause a little longer to find the words he was looking for, or made some mistakes. I live in Asia and sometimes, especially among non-native English speakers, I feel like because I need to speak more slowly and carefully, I make a lot of mistakes when speaking English. I often find myself correcting myself using the correct words/grammar that I misspoke just moments earlier. Fortunately, this doesn't tend to happen around native speakers, but it is an interesting curiosity. While I read/write (or should I say type) English daily, I don't tend to speak it much, except when I go on business trips to other countries. That's because I am, like the guy in the video, fluent in the language of the country I live in.

The reason why he struggles is because it's extremely difficult to switch to another language (even your mother tongue) in a situation during which you are used to using another language. You can compare it to wearing heels while playing sports even though you are used to wearing trainers. It would be extremely difficult to exercise, while you might be completely fine going out partying all night on those same heels. Switching languages quickly is an art in itself and difficult to do.

Margreet Abrahamse not really? i can speak both italian and switch to english without any difficulties.
@CeecileArya6 жыл бұрын
YA DAMN RIGHT That's because it's something you do regularly. The guy probably doesn't get to speak English that often. It's the same for me with French. Even though it's my mother tongue I find it awkward to express myself in French and prefer English.
@bono82365 жыл бұрын
@@rawrbanana5762 Maybe it is more because of the similarity between English and Italian. Switching English to Korean or vice versa is quite different. (p.s. I know Italian is more similar to Spanish than English. I just want to say to compare English-Italian with English-Korean. And he does not struggle. He just stopped speaking cuz there were really not many topics to say suddenly in English. American friends ask me to speak Korean with other Korean whom I just met through them. I have "nothing" to say with him. What could I say to the person just I met. where are you from? what is your name? that's it.

I'm a native French speaker and taught English in Korea for 2 years. My sister visited my in SK afterwards and she was shocked at how bad my French had become lol. My thought processes are in English now and I have to translate in my head before I speak French.
@Scgod25 жыл бұрын
It's interesting how languages can be fighting in your head over dominance to be the main form of communication. It takes a lot, and I mean A LOT of practice. That's why, even bilingual or multi-lingual kids struggle as well. They get frustrated and can't decide how to translate or which word to use, because they must balance and juggle languages on the spot, which takes practice, and if you don't get that practice, you will have a hard time. Growing up in California, I had my fair share of watching my classmates get annoyed that they couldn't translate or explain what a word in Spanish was in English. I saw other kids just give up and tell us, "just learn the language" because they couldn't be bothered. This is why I have mad respect for translators and interpreters. They do a job that is not highly respected, taken advantage of, and low pay. Seriously, show more respect to a translator next time. They do a job, that no one wants, and not many know how to do.

That used to happen to me often. I went on vacation to visit my grandparents. After I got back, if someone asked me a question in English, I would reply back with a jumble of different words in different languages. Plus since the guy said he's been living in Korea since 1978, that's about 37 years. If you consistently speak a language on a day to day basis, you either get other languages mixed up or your native language sometimes gets "pushed" to the back of your head. It's actually easier to listen to and understand another language than it is to reply back even if you know the language fully, but haven't been keeping up or practicing using it.
