Last Stand of the Firebrands Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard Lore

Wow, I remember this battle report. The lore made what was otherwise an absurdly onesided fight cool. I forget the exact issue but there was a pair of battle reports in white dwarf around the same time where an Empire army fought an Orcs and Goblins army two or three times. They had such a cool moment in it that they wrote some lore for it afterwards. The cool moment had to do with a 5 man detachment of free company militia the Empire player took because he was 40 ish points short of the agreed points limit and they were the only unit cheap enough for him to take for that cost. Free Company were garbage back then, they always have been really, and he expected them to accomplish nothing. During the battle that unit was ignored by the orc player and wound up out of position for the main fight, but they were able to charge the orc shaman. An Orc Shaman hero can easily wipe the floor with that unit, and it did except for the last dude. He then held on for several turns and eventually killed the shaman. It shouldn't have happened. The shaman had 2-3 attacks hitting and wounding on threes against a model with one wound and no save while the militia guy had two attacks hitting on fours and wounding on 5s. It would be a fun one to look out four, it was somewhere around the same time as this one.

Another great scenario short story from white dwarf 285 (US/CA printing not sure which UK one had it) was the Battle of Sternburg, with a small empire patrol needing to hold a town from beastmen attack until reinforcements could arrive

Ciaphas Cain also got betrayed by magos who wanted to plunder Necron tombs who refused to acknowledge the danger. He also’d multiple expeditions to asteroids to investigate missing miners where because he always had the worst/best luck, he ran into both Necrons and Nids on the same asteroid.
