They indulge in their team's successes to get away from the fact that they live in failures. No matter how many championships 'your' team has, you still left with crappy job with crappy pay and a miserable life (can YOU run 15 minute mile?)... and if you keep talking about 'your' team's achievements in front of your boss, chances are he'll fire you from your job. Workplace is not a place to talk sports.

@@111voodoo No , you can't. I enjoy investing , trading and money management. I enjoy growing my money and seeing a tangible return that improves my quality of life. I enjoy exercise because it improves my health , improves my sexual health , relieves stress , helps me sleep better , and increases my energy levels. Many things people enjoy doing do not provide any positive benefit , and in many cases their leisure activities are actually negative , or at the least wasted time.

The Roman Empire and the Greek Empire are mostly considered to be the people who created sports. They used these events as a distraction for other things that were going on! I know it's just a movie, but Gladiator is actually loosely based on a true story. There's a scene where two Roman politicians are having a conversation, one politician says "Games! 150 days of games!", and the other politician says "Huh! He's more clever than I thought." This scene is referring to how sports were created to give people an easy access to a different type of buzz, a different type of drug, that people could instantly access anywhere and at anytime. Me personally, I love drugs! Not all, but I love stimulants! However, I recognize that these drugs cannot be accessed at anytime or anywhere... unlike sports. The drug of sports can be accessed anytime/anywhere by thinking about them, anytime/anywhere by reading about them, anytime/anywhere by talking about them at anytime/anywhere, you can't overdose on them, you can't get chemically addicted to them, and you can't get hungover on them. I used to be a sports fanatic myself. The biggest eye opener for me and the main reason I stopped watching, was the amount of division it causes between people. There are people who literally hate other people for the sole fact that they like a different team than they do. I once had a man tell me that I would never advance in my career because I don't obsess or know about sports the way others do. That would be true if we worked in the sports industry, but we didn't at all. That person never really took the time to learn their job, they just distracted guys in upper management by shifting the conversation to sports so they didn't focus on his work. This seemed to work with older managers for years, but his luck ran out and now he has to figure shit out with millennial management who's looking at him like...🤔 Meanwhile, I have advanced by building my skills, knowledge, expertise, and, social capital.

this is it. in many ways sports (like talk of travel) was a way to differentiate the favorites and enable nepotism to persist. whenever you hear a board or other group of managers relating on something so trivial and spending significant work time doing this, you know they're not there to be productive but to maintain an in-crowd nepotism.

I view the USA's obsession with sports as a toxic, borderline abusive, relationship because the subsidies for these stadiums. All economic impact studies show that in the vast majority of cases these stadiums that are paid for with taxpayer money lose the city money and provide no economic benefit at all and in many cases the areas around them continue to be ghetto after they are built. Look at Detroit, they spent hundreds of millions on MLB and NFL stadiums and then the city literally went bankrupt. If you think about it if these were good investments why doesn't the team owner go to the bank and get the financing for it themselves? Yet the owners of these teams threaten to move and all of a sudden its a big crises and tons of people get mad at the politicians and blame them if the team does move, so as a result the politicians just give the owners everything they want at the expense of the taxpayers. Its disgusting.

It is and everything you've described in that comment is the reason why I've become a casual fan of sports here in the US over the past number of years or so. You summed it up well. And it's not just men. I think a lot of people start following sports in order to fit in with the herd. Most probably aren't actually naturally interested in it. And what is "it"? The throwing? The catching? The technique, skill, raw stimulation? You're right, people are bitching themselves by wearing another man's name. The whole tribal thing? When it used to matter, in our tribal days, people went to great lengths to become and remain dominant. No one would willy-nilly sell their manhood. Football doesn't replace or even cater to "tribal instincts". My tribal instincts tell me to annihilate soft little chumps like the aforementioned. Football just allows fans and viewers to reminisce on our proto- athletic contests, ie deathmatches. But I digress. If you want to spend your free time/ life watching another group of guys do something you couldn't dream ever doing, then congrats? Or, how about go for a run, or think creative and original thoughts, or go out and ACT like a man and help other people and offer your time in a way that benefits at least somebody. You watch it for entertainment? How boring and one-dimensional your life must be. To spend hours watching, checking stats, fucking around on your apps. It's sad. And if there must be an evolutionary explanation for it, it's this: the guys you watch, throwing the ball and tackling other men- would have been the dudes who absolutely desecrated your life, your wife, your possessions, land, etc. They are the dudes you'd hide from. (Although in a way, that's how it is- you, little prey animal, weak and pathetic in all aspects, hiding behind your coffee table making a raucous). So freeing.

Especially when people were trying to grab food before night classes, or right after their afternoon classes. That's just life. No big deal. You stand in line and wait your turn. But every damn day....the football team and all their coaches and assistant coaches...would POUR into the dining hall. Literally 100+ people. And they would cut straight to the front of the line. Just walk right past everyone. All sweaty and stinky after their practice. People would complain, and the coaches would chew them out. "THIS IS THE ONLY TIME WE CAN EAT! WE'VE BEEN AT PRACTICE ALL DAY!!!" The dining hall staff let them cut in line. The whole university defended the practice, but the students thought it was BS. Some of us only have small windows of time to eat as well...because we are at CLASS all day! You know...the reason you are in college!?!?!

My dislike for sports started as a kid where I would get picked on in gym class. I wouldn't know how to play the game and kids and sometimes gym teachers would put me down real bad. I got lots of hate. One time when I was in the 6th grade the whole grade went on a field trip to a park towards the end of the year and we had to play sports all day. We were playing baseball and I didn't catch the ball with my glove and I caused the other team to win. I had kids yelling in my face calling me a loser and a piece of shit. I even a had PTA mother who was on the trip yelling at me and asking me questions like ''Do you not know how to play''? and they were all talking to me like I was garbage. It fucked me up as a youth and I grew into hating sports with a passion. I see people now watching baseball, football, basketball, hockey and all that other stuff and I hate it and find zero interest in it. I even had a woman once trying to get me to like basketball and I just couldn't get into it. My favorite is when they all eat like pigs on Super Bowl sunday and watch some football game. Who put that together? All people get from that is a bowl full of diarrhea the next day.

I'm with you man. Ive been trying to understand for years why so many people are super obsessed with sports. Its getting to a point were its even fatal. True story, a woman literally killed another woman because she did not cheer when she told her that her favorite sports team won a big game. On believable, its just a fucking game that don't matter!

Sports to me kind of seems like the "Everyman Hobby". It's a social lubricant. Don't know how to break the ice? Sports. Need something to occupy yourself with at the bar? Sports. Need to go somewhere on a date? Go to a game. I personally do not understand them either.

Sports is a cope to a miserable life, I see so many "men" who have kids and would much rather watch their fucking game on Sunday than spend that day with the kids. I mean, a dad spending just one entire day a week with his kids can make all the difference in their lives. I don't wanna hear that, "but it's my only day off." bullshit. You should've thought about that before having kids.

That comment about wearing a jersey with another dude's name on the back is spot on. Jerseys are for 10 year olds. Dress like a grown man. I went to an amusement park with my kids a month ago and almost every adult male was dressed like a toddler. Baggy cargo shorts, graphic tees with comic book characters or sports team names, ball caps on backwards, flip flops. Put on some big boy pants and a button up shirt and you'll stand out in a crowd like a sore thumb.

Exactly. Children wear those jerseys because they want to be like those athletes when they grow up. A grown man has already grown up and is most likely not an athlete, so why wear the jersey of another man you will never be like?

I've always wondered this myself. I'm a car guy, so I love racing. But even then I really don't watch racing. it's more fun to do than observe, unless you are trying to learn technique from a master of the craft. It's to the point where guys will walk up to you and ask you questions about a team or a player or a decision that a team has made pretty much fully expecting that it will turn into a full-on 5 to 10 minute conversation about sports. And then when I tell them I really don't watch sports, they're not really disappointed but more in a little bit of bemused disbelief. And then sometimes I get the "so if you don't if you're not into sports then what are you into?" As if that's the only thing in the world that a man can be into. And then, how do you pledge allegiance to one team? I get if you're from particular area you support the team where you're from. But the teams are always trading players every year or however long a player's contract lasts with that team. so you could have a player from arrival team end up playing for your team that you support the very next year. so what's the point of liking a particular team when all the players are getting passed around to every team? It makes probably more sense to admire particular player. It can literally mean that your team can be good one year and then the next year it can go to crap. so what makes you pledge allegiance to that team when a team is comprised of players that don't even stay with the team for longer than their contract if they don't re-up for another season?

I once went into a sports bar with my laptop and ordered a drink. I went to a quiet corner and sat down with my drink, started sipping it, and became very engrossed with writing on my laptop. I paid no attention to the background--the loud conversations, the ball game, the noise, the sports bar ambiance--until I heard someone clear her throat. I looked up; three women were sitting around me at my table, smiling and staring at me! I was so engrossed in my writing that I never noticed them! I folded my laptop and had a fun chat with them--as the guys around me cheered on their TV sports team. So, never be afraid to be the lone Sigma at the sports bar. You are sometimes rewarded for it!

@@DK-uc9zr It isn't healthy if the participant fails to have perspective. However, sports are an entertainment venue just like any other. It's a matter of taste. I don't care for horror flicks. I fail to see the charm in it. There are those who delight in being scared, viewing cinematic gorefests, or travel to ComicCon Conventions to chat with actors' about their portrayals in "SAW". It's not my thing but I wouldn't admonish or denigrate someone just because it didn't fit my tastes. As long no one is injured & they have informed consent, go for it. I may think they are idiots but different strokes for different folks.
