I love your description of the main canes and lateral canes with blooms. Thank you. Very good to understand.

Just for clarification, you can absolutely grow a climbing rose on a pole or an arbor and still make them horizontal. You simply zig zag the canes or circle them horizontally around the pole. You will get lateral breaks since the canes will be horizontal. Want to leave this comment in case there are any folks out there new to roses and reading the comments. Happy growing!

This method will work fine as long as the rose is not too robust and has canes flexible enough to bend in tight angles. Thank you, Susan, for contributing to the rose conversation.

I would have loved for you to show us how to do what you were saying with the branches. This looks like it was laying on the ground? I'm confused I guess.

I picked new dawn rose because I seen an arbor full of them. This was in a formal garden which had all plants labeled. I fell in love, found a couple plants and got my husband to build an arbor. So please explain why you say it cannot be grown on an arbor.

Beautiful,,just wondering can they grown in a pot I like the new dawn climber is there a smaller variety and disease resistant

New Dawn is much too big to put in a pot. There are miniature roses that would fit in a pot, and they come in many beautiful colors. Full size roses will work in a large pot like a whiskey barrel for a few years, but will eventually outgrow it. You also have to be aware of winter damage if you live in zone 6 or lower.
