I love your videos like this where you give smaller details about words we may hear a lot but not get the context. Thank you!

Should we also use "об" before words starting with vowels other than "o"? I mean, examples such as "Я думаю об Англии" or "Она говорила об этом магазине" or "об иностранцах".
@LiveRussian7 жыл бұрын
Tomas O Maonaigh you're right. We use ОБ before nouns, pronouns and adjectives starting with a vowel: об этом, об игре, об интересном фильме. What is interesting, there is also a rare preposition ОБО that is used in the following cases: обо мне, обо всём/ about everything, обо всех / about everyone

Are those the only three times one would use the prepositions "обо" or are there more as well?
@vovasensei7 жыл бұрын
Jinado1 The book rule is that "обо" is used before words starting with "чт", "вс", "мн", and it usually is, but not always. Обо всём, обо всех, обо всяких, обо всегдашних, обо многих.

Maybe a video regarding "lets meet about 2 oclock" "I need about 5 minutes to get ready" "I earned about 100 dollars last night" " I will go there about july" "I will buy about six lemons" etc. I imagine okala doesnt cover all these? A guy from Eastern Ukraine told me I should say "gde-to 2 chasa" for "about 2 oclock" and a girl in Kyiv said "omg, never say that"

Oh you mean that secret meaning of "about"? Got it!

Фёдор, предлог об используется не только перед О, а перед всему гласными. Это же школьная истина. Unfortunately Fedor is mistaken. The preposition ОБ used before any words beginning with a vowel.

We now understand the difference in meaning between the two: о тебе, про тебя, but what about different tenses?
@israelmorales39027 жыл бұрын
Примеры : -я говорю о мои желания, мои идеи, мои будущие проекты -когда она приехала, я говорил об игре. (is the об used here because the next word starts with vowel ?) - Я хочу знать об их навыках (their skills). -Я хочу знать о моих школьных знаках (my school marks).
@stivosaurus7 жыл бұрын
> я говорю о мои желания Not meaning to get sidetracked, but is this an instance where one should use свой instead of мой ?
@BeFluentinRussian7 жыл бұрын
Here, since none of the words start with О, you could use both "о and об".

kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJrFqqVpnaaWb5o Here I talk about the difference between мой and твой. But in this case, both could be used.
@vovasensei7 жыл бұрын
Israel Morales "об игре" - correct; you did conjugate most of the words with proper endings, but the first line should be in the prepositional case, too - you are talking ABOUT things. So, "о моих желаниях, о моих идеях, моих моих будущих проектах".

Not related to these words but I stumbled onto the word занимается , while looking up these words. Do you have a lesson on this ? The word helps me to better translate things from English in that I see I am saying “ to engage in” verses “is doing “ . I think is a lightbulb moment for me !

I remember talking about it somewhere.. but I can't find a separate video. It's a great topic and you can expect to see the video on it here pretty soon!

So in Polina Gagarina's song Спектакль Окончен she says the line "Дописали мы свой роман про любовь." But it's a love story, so the love is inherent to the story. Should that not be "o" instead?

Yes! Не может - he can't (может is conjugated for the third person) Нельзя - forbidden (just simply forbidden, as a rule)

It's interesting that, by comparison, in Ukrainian, the Russian title "Сказка о Царе Салтане [...]" ("The Tale of Tsar Saltan [...])" is translated as "Казка про Царя Салтана [...]."

Sadly, this is one reason I never subscribe to such channels despite it being informative, since there is no real interaction in the commentaries and no answers to our important questions.
