My father is Catawba (born 1931 in Catawba County, North Carolina); however I'm still learning more about our history. My grandmother passed in 1944, the year when Catawba was officially recognized as the Catawba Nation. Looking forward to learning more. Thank you.

@@ericwilliams-de6dx @ericwilliams-de6dx I feel you on this. Since I've made this post a year ago, I've learned so much. However, it has been an emotional rollercoaster as I continue to learn the history of the paper genocide and other acts imposed upon the indigenous tribes; thus allowing identities to be hijacked. Very unfortunate and unacceptable.

Ain't that a trip. Yet someone like the late Rosa Parks, Tina Turner, and Aaliyah and many living Black peoplecwho look mostly indigenous are excluded and called the you- know-what slur and told 'go back' to Africa and we are not from there. We are Nijii (indigenous and Black) and have always been here. Only about a fourth of my ancestors were Black Africans.

After applying for citizenship, I sadly learned how it's a shame citizenship cannot be granted if your lineage is not registered to the 1943 Final Base Membership Roll, 1961 and 2000 Federal Registry of the Catawba Indian Nation. Thus any lineage that predates 1943, they are literally excluded. My grandmother passed 1942. On the other hand, my father and grandfather who are unregistered are now both deceased, thus I have no way of receiving citizenship. I was literally told -this is the end of the road. Meaning, just accept the reclassifications that has been imposed upon us and move on.

My Great Great Grandma was Catawba. It got mixed with Scandinavian around the 1800’s and then got washed out by 1940’s by British and Irish grand parents. They claimed Cherokee but I did more research and found out I was Catawba before any preceding tribes or ancestry. Soooooo yeah. My Lineage started out native and got watered down to avoid the trail of tears. They stopped in Birmingham AL before going back up to Huntsville and settling permanently.
