About the Breed: There is “something for everyone” in this smooth, elegant animal; riding comfort, strength and stamina for the avid trail rider; calm tractable disposition so important in the family mount; arrogant, flashy presence and action which set the exhibitor and parade rider apart from
others.
The Peruvian Horse is a naturally gaited horse. No artificial devices or special training aids are necessary to enable the horse to perform its specialty “pisos” - a natural four beat footfall of medium speed that provides a ride of incomparable smoothness and harmony of movement. It’s the only horse bred for termino, an outward swinging motion of the front legs not to be confused with “paddling.” Breed information from NAPHA.

I rode a Peruvian Paso on a Paso stud just outside Lima in Peru in 2002, after completing the BHS Inca Trail ride (which we had done on Andean ponies, riding up over the Andes from Cusco to Machu Picchu). I've ridden horses all my life, but the Paso was the smoothest thing I have ever experienced - like sitting on a swan, floating across the ground. It was an unearthly, magical experience (rounded off with the best Pisco Sour I've ever tasted)! I have always secretly wanted a Paso ever since... So glad you have highlighted this very special breed on your wonderful Quest. Thank you.

Peruvian horse gait origins comes from their environment in the desertic coast line of Peru, where they were used as transport among towns, and they got "used to" swim on the dunes of sand, a gait they transmitted to their offspring. Because of the isolation of those regions, the breed remained "pure" ever since.

One of our horse rescues here in San Diego County (Tir Na Nog) rescued several of these horses and one just died yesterday. He was 27 and his name was Siglo. He was a beautiful horse, red in color and a champion. I had never heard of the breed before, but am glad I checked it out. They are wonderful horses!

Peruvian Paso Horses great feature is their great stamina, and their gait makes long rides smoother and less stressful to their riders (chalanes). This race was originally bred in order to allow landowners or foremen to supervise their field workers at haciendas and/or plantations for longer periods of time and more distance.

The narrator says the Peruvian Horse is bred for termino, but this is totally erroneous. Termino is incidental and has little to do with the smoothness of the horse. Some horses have wide termino and some have li†tle, it is of little use in the show ring. The Peruvian moves his forelegs out of the way of his hind so that he does not forge; drive his hind hoof into his fore pastern. The width of his termino is flashy, but not necessary and appears in different degrees in different horses. Smoothness, brio, harmony and timing are the finer points of this animal… truly the naturally smoothest riding horse in the world. I think they are beautiful. But i would not want to ride with that tack. It looks uncomfortable. Its not written in stone is it ? As long as the saddle fits properly & allows them to gait.
