Above The Battlefield: Pals at Serre

Above The Battlefield is a project to film the WW1 Battlefields from above using a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ Drone. All filming is done with permission and special thanks to Commonwealth War Graves Commission: www.cwgc.org/
This video covers the battlefield at Serre on the Somme where on 1st July 1916 the men from some of the northern Pals battalions went over the top. In the area covered by the film the Leeds Pals, Barnsley Pals, Sheffield City Battalion and Accrington Pals went over the top on 1st July 1916: First Day of the Battle of the Somme.

Private William Allen Craven 18/667 Bradford Pals - KIA 1/7/1916 Out of Monk Trench Serre. My Great Uncle. Visited 3 times and will be returning one day. RIP.

Private James William Holt, 14th York’s and Lanc’s 2nd Barnsley pals. He left Nairne tench on 1st July 16 and died within yards. His remains were never recovered. He was my great uncle, RIP Jimmy Berry.

I am a very lucky person I own and fly a Light Aircraft and I sometimes fly over the Battlefileds of the WW1 You can see so much from the air even today God Bless them

My Great uncle Thomas Wilfred Hancock 12/1763, Y&L 13th Btn (1st Barnsley Pals) KIA 1st July 1916. His body was never recovered. Visited Saturday 22nd June 24 and laid a wreath.

@@OldFrontLine Hi there he was from sheffield, Eccleshall. I have his victory medal and letter from war office on my wall. Felt I needed to make a pilgrimage as Im custodian of his medal and letter.
