The problem is the pool owner. If you don't know how much chlorine to add or when to add it then the problem is the owner not the chlorine. By the way, at this point everyone knows that a salt water pool is a chlorine pool. You just make it with your little in-line generator as opposed to it being made in a factory. Also a salt water pool will continue to make chlorine as long as the pump is running and also continue to raise the PH level. Chlorine dangerous to handle??? Give me a break, it's more dangerous to gas up my lawn mower,snow blower or car.

we love our salt pool, to start up pool from scratch with salt cost about $300, ours take 18 bags for 25.000 gal. Note salt cell cost to replace starts about $200+ salt system great does not fade clothes, no burning eyes, no dry skin, no chlorine taste or smell

I know this is an older video but the one big caveat that has recently become an issue is how much a salt chlorinator raises the PH to extremely high amounts. And while you are talking about Above Ground Pools, those who have in ground 30-40K gallon pools is a bigger task to maintain with salt, especially in regards to upfront costs, replacing the salt cell when it fails, and dealing with high PH levels that will corrode the plaster if not dealt with on a weekly basis. You're video was very informative but I think it needs to updated at this point, at least based on other things I have seen on YT and read about on this subject.

I agree with you. Salt water systems are a total scam. I buy a chlorine card for $40 CDN for 100 liters (22 gallons). I put 700ml (0.7L) in per night at the end of the day, after everyone is finished swimming, run the pump for an hour and done. No real work. Salt water systems only generate chlorine when the pump is running. Therefore burning more electricity, and either not making enough or making too much, while it sends the PH through the roof. Then they tell you to add more chemicals to lower the PH. Everyone I know that has got a pool in the last 10 years has been talked into this BS salt water system. I have been dealing with a pool with no problems for over 35 years. If you want to get fished in.... then you should get a salt water system.... after all fish like salt water.

chemically, why does a salt water pool disinfect with less ppm of chlorine? What other factor in the salt system allows for less ppm of chlorine. That doesnt make sense to me. Thanks, enjoyed the video.
@abovegroundpros5 жыл бұрын
The way a salt system works is it slowly pumps chlorine in the water virtually consistently which allows you to keep your chlorine level really low.
@emccallum10125 жыл бұрын
@@abovegroundpros gotcha, thanks. That is similar to what I do in my chlorine pool. I get my CYA up to about 40 and use the HASA liquidator to trickle sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in. I also have a Delta UV light, but I am not too impressed with it. I think it eats chlorine. I check things about once a week in the summer, rarely have issues keeping the the chlorine around 3ppm. If I go out of town for a week, I dump a good dose of chlorine in the pool. If you learn a little chemistry, it isnt hard.

Seriously, way good info. Thanks for posting it. Now know I have to stick with Chlorine as the metal frame won't last with a NaCl system. As it was only a $350 intex pool, we'll stick with CL and upgrade to salt water/resin frame next time around.

I live in the tropics. A pool is very susceptible to algae. Will chlorine or salt work best to keep it at bay?
@abovegroundpros6 жыл бұрын
I would probably recommend chlorine because of salt system may keep the chlorine level so low that you may still have problems.
@anthonyduncan51375 жыл бұрын
I live in the tropics and have a customer base of 3500 pools, our worse pools for algae are chlorine pools, where chlorine is added by customer manually. If you can't stop a pool from going green in the tropics in a salt pool you have miss sized the chlorinator. The hotter the water the higher the demand for chlorine.

If the chlorine content of a salt pool is so much less than using chlorine, is it any less effective at sanitization?

No. A salt system can keep the chlorine level low consistently because it's constantly pump and chlorine into the pool at a very low rate.

Does one still need to balance a saltwater pool with all the chemicals (aside from chlorine) at start-up? And also test all the levels throughout the season? Does one need to test the salt level? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
@abovegroundpros3 жыл бұрын
Every pool on this earth needs to use the balanced chemicals regardless of what's your sanitizer is. And yes you still want to test your water throughout the season. A salt system is only an alternative to keep from putting chlorine in the pool manually.

So since a salt water generator is always continually creating chlorine, does the amount of stabilizer go down as compared to a traditional chlorine pool. I have a 40k gallon pool in direct sunlight. I had an extremely hard time keeping chlorine in the water, and I was constantly adding stabilizer.
@abovegroundpros4 жыл бұрын
No stabilizer is needed all the same or the Sun's just going to eat all that chlorine up.

Salt is a great idea until you need to replace the top wall stabilizers. Mine went bad and rusted completely on a Doughboy pool within a few years using it.

I'm new to pools and still learning about them. I just bought a house with a traditional freshwater pool in it. I am inclined to going salt. Although there is an additional investment required ($600 - $1,500) for the chlorine generator and associated controls, I think that is minimal in the long run. I need something clarified though. What I have is an inground pool that is rimmed with tiles to show the water line and what looks a painted liner behind poured concrete (I think). The deck around the pool is concrete. Would my setup work well as a salt water conversion?

Stainless steel is recognized as the premium material for marine applications in seawater where it is used for its excellent corrosion resistance, lustre, strength and stiffness. Why is a steel pool not recommended for salt water pools then?
