Even amongst unparalleled orators such as Jefferson, FDR and Kennedy, Lincoln stands alone as the greatest amongst our presidents. His prose, mostly self written, is unmatched for not only the quality of its content, but its poetic, almost melodious beauty. The story of Abraham Lincoln, who he was, what he did, and what he represents, is virtually unfathomable... drenched in Greatness. This ‘simple’ letter to a mourning mother is one of hundreds of examples why the man has become myth.

Whenever I need a reminder to not complain and whine about my present life, this always puts things into perspective. I live in paradise in comparison to what this generation sacrificed for me. Thank you.

I speak Dutch, but I must say that this letter, written by Abraham Lincoln, is one of the most beautiful in history. This letter is so respectful. The words are put so perfect together. Amazing.!

I am so impressed by the regal bearing of Harve Presnell as George Marshall in this film. I recently rediscovered this incredible talent who sang in Paint your wagon and the unsinkable molly brown among other credits. Why in God's name this man wasn't the biggest star on the globe is unfathomable to me. Better looking than any man had a right to be, with a singing voice sweeter than the angel Gabriel's trumpet notes. The most undervalued entertainer and greatest singer I've ever heard. PERIOD! Now like his great contemporary Robert Goulet, he lends his timeless elegance to this wonderful film. His speaking voice and sincerity in reciting the letter from Abraham Lincoln are enough to squeeze tears from a granite statue. Abraham Lincoln and Harve Presnell, are truly unique and truly the best. Abraham Lincoln's Speech from "Saving Private Ryan".

Notice at the very moment Marshall finishes the letter by citing Abraham Lincoln's name, the shot cuts to a shot of the second most senior officer, with a portrait of Washington in the background (05:10). Another great President present in spirit in this moment of truth.

Yeah shut down about 300 newspapers, decided the states were not free and independent, but ruled by the central government in Washington, and even tried to deport a sitting congressman who disagreed with his war. The man was a tyrant who despised the Constitution. Washington and Jefferson would have hated him.

Its a powerful moment. I'm a new zealander who knows we owe a profound debt of gratitude to mainly the USN and ESPECIALLY the marines who won the war down here against Japan, and in so doing saved my country. Also Lincoln is a colossus in history. It is shameful now that the "party of Lincoln " besmerchs his name and honor.

@cardinalRG11 ай бұрын
Trump on his best day couldn't form a sentence approaching what flowed from Lincoln naturally, nor cloak it in any sincerity, not muster a fraction of the leadership to make meaningful a letter to a grieving mother. Trump stopped meeting the return of fallen warriors on the tarmac, because he lacked the guts to withstand the reproach of gold star families. He thinks that people who join the military are chumps and losers, and would have had no taste for rescuing Private Ryan unless he could make a self-glorifying publicity stunt out of it. Get a grip...if you put Trump on that kind of pedestal, then you're in a cult, friend.
