It is a lovely looking unit, I make no apologies for my last purchase, a power amplifier delivered to my door for 460 Inc taxes . It is quite simply the best power amplifier I have listened to so far . At 150 wpc into 8ohms it has enough power for most speakers . The build quality blows my mind, and it's 18 kilos and performance is just non compliant to the price . I fear these kind of units will not be available long, and I'm just pleased I managed to get one .. I've been running a 404 for a couple of years now and it is wonderful. Beautiful to look at, feels hand crafted and sounds terrific. Mine has the inbuilt phono stage which is also top notch. Another reason for loving it is because its crafted by a few chaps in a workshop in Sweden, who are passionate about what they do. It doesn't come off a big production line. I love products that have a real story and connection to their makers.

Over 30 years ago I purchased Rega’s range topping integrated amp which remained the beating heart of my hi-fi system until I upgraded 5 years ago. The Elicit. More recently Rega have introduced 2 integrated amps, higher in their range. I’ve auditioned both of them and didn’t consider the increase in performance, warranted the 2 & 3 times price. Now Rega have introduced a preamp/mono blocks combo. I’ve still got a soft spot for Rega and would luv to see that combo reviewed.

Hi Tarun, the Moonriver amp has indeed the looks and looks are important. It is also a very interesting "experiment" to see how far you can push a TI chip (I was thinking of the LM1875, but I gladly take this). I guess we have the answer here. That in it self makes this review and this amp very interesting, i.e. that is something I really wanted to know, for the sake of general audio knowledge. As for ideas what amp to review next, I would love to see a review of the BC Acoustique EX-214, you could say this is in many ways the opposite of the Moonriver amp. It is made in France, it is a budget amp (but still it seems to be build with passion) and it is discrete. It is not the latest model on the market, but I think it is an interesting product to look at.

Enjoyed the review, Tarun. I'd like to see you review the NAD C268 class D power amp, for which I haven't yet seen a decent KZbin review. It was GBP 799 but is now on sale at several outlets including Sevenoaks for GBP 529 - rats! I bought it at GBP 599 and even then thought it a bargain. It's wonderful, best of my 4 power amps; I can't understand why anyone would want to spend more as it sounds so very atmospheric and engagingly sparkling. Listening to Billie Eilish's "My strange addiction", the catchy bassline tangibly and 3D-ingly bounces with my open baffle main speakers -- Billy's voice, equally 3D, sounds rich and tonally nuanced at centre stage. On a side note, I see you mention that the Quad Revela 1's require a powerful amp. Thing is, driving them with the C268 -- which is nominally 80 w/ch -- I have to set its gain control at minimum PLUS have to have a passive attenuator between it and my preamp to give me reasonable play on the preamp's volume control. I don't get why reviewers often stress high power output. With my main O/B's, I need yet more attenuation, of course, and even a nominal 25W/ch Musical Fidelity A1 (class A) power amp clone is more than enough to drive the Revelas.

Also, if they have taken care with power supply and wiring, plus good heat sinks, all can affect the "thin edge" of performance.

There have been a few relatively expensive amplifiers that have used these before. Some actually prefer the sound signature of them. Higher cost and technology used doesn't always translate into good sound quality. I own the standard 404 and it does not have as beefy of a power supply as the reference. Have no idea why serious audio equipment is still being made with single-ended RCA connectors. They are completely inferior to balanced XLR connectors.

Built in Sweden, hand built...I´m sorry but I just don´t care. I only see basic parts/design (not even balanced) with low power rating (no 4 ohm rating? 🤔). When looking at prices these days from some Swedish/Norwegian (like Ø audio) brands I have difficulties to understand who buys these products.. Anyway, thanks for the review 😊

Thanks Tarun, Ironically, for a place where indoor activities predominate in bad weather. The birth rate is pretty low. Id be interested in your take on Unison Research amplifiers. I have liked the Primo and Due amps that I've owned. Pathos is another brand that is a tube hybrid. Also well made and thought of. Cheers.

It's LM3886 - in this price? No, thanks 😀
@rm-mastering3 сағат бұрын
Yep, I'm with you on that one, Jeff Roland did it back in the 90's I've found these chip based amps were never a serious contender for real hifi, they've always lacked scale and dynamics regardless of the power supply. I've built really good versions of these back then I think it was the gain clone
@Аняна3 сағат бұрын
@rm-mastering I had LM3886 setup in Cambridge Audio amplifiers and in professional equipment for sound reinforcement in large spaces. It always sounded the same - like a cheap nightclub in Kyiv 😄 Maybe if they used a few in a bridged configuration, it would be better? When a single chip is used, it won’t be audiophile-quality or loud. At least this amplifier looks nice. If I didn’t know anything about it, I’d probably buy it. It’s just as "good" as Electrocompaniet in Class AB with a switching power supply. Premium brands... Ha ha ha 😄

IMHO this is a horrible build, engineered with a transformer on top of the PCB, which is great if you want broken PCBs and lots of returns. It can be sweet sounding for the price but there are many many points for which I would avoid this amp. Thankfully we have plenty of good amps nowdays to choose from.

@portwill; Well, mate, we can't see what's under the transformer, or how, or if, the transformer is attached... You're not said what "many, many points" are? I'm not a fan of any of the overly expensive "audiophile" gear, but I do have 30+ years of experience in electronic systems development work, from aerospace to marine to mobile phones, and this amp actually looks quite nicely built, and the power supply very good, and it's so much better built than gear being flogged for 2-4x .... Enjoy your listening.
@lohikarhu734Сағат бұрын
@portwill; BTW, a very quick look shows a big old bolt through the transformer, so that it's most likely to be sitting on a big standoff, and secured to the bottom of the chassis; none of the wiring is soldered directly to the PCB, do that there appears to be no possibility for any movement of the transformer to be transferred to the PCB in the case that the unit is brutally handled.

@bw88275 сағат бұрын
No balanced connections on an amplifier in this price range is unfogivable.
@gryphongryph4 сағат бұрын
Seriously! Balanced is for studio, why in the world would you like two of everything? In a home stereo system? Balance does not automatically sound better, many audio designers believe it degrades the sound instead of enchanting it, also a true balance design is much more costly. Ps I have both balanced and unbalanced equipment in my house, but I never listen to my setups thinking 🤔 uhh that song would sound so much better balanced 😂
@mw36404 сағат бұрын
There are a plethora of amps in this and higher price ranges that lacks balanced connections and it would not make any difference to sound quality. Both balanced and unbalanced topologies have their inherent flaws, in the end it comes down to how they are implemented.
