As always Tarun (if I’m spelling it right, you’ve challenged my preconceptions. After several argumentative posts, I’ve come around to your way of thinking. I now think that 70 Watts is likely enough power to drive decent speakers, and even 35 Watts isn’t out of the ball park, if it’s the right 35 Watts. I now listen at 70 dB +/- instead of pushing 90 dB. And I understand why you’re so attached to your ProAc speakers as a reference. I too have some speakers against which I measure all others. I will agree with others who cite you as the best HiFi reviewer on KZbin. You’re not pushing any other agenda but your own sonic happiness; and by so doing, allowing us the freedom to seek our own sonic happiness. This is a rare quality; most of the time we are treated to reviewers who demand or imply that our happiness must resemble his (or her) happiness. I don’t get that vibe from you somehow. You seem to encourage us to find our own happiness by modeling your own. No one can accuse you of being a product schill. Good on ya for that!

My favorite part of this review had nothing to do with the equipment. My favorite part of this review is where tarun casually states don’t upgrade in small bits or something like that. That is absolutely marvelous advice. It’s very easy to be on the upgrade carousel and constantly be doing incremental upgrades and spend a ton of money and waste a lot of time. I was just starting to spin up the carousel. Thank you for reminding me Tarun.

Hi Tarun, a thoroughly professional job as always. I’ve always been interested in sound quality first, but it’s strange how none of my gear is what I would call ugly. Obviously I’m being seduced by the looks before I ever audition it so I’m probably missing out on plenty of great sounding products just because I wouldn’t want it in my rack. Over the years I grow to love pieces more as I get used to them or, in my case, modify them. There is one piece in particular that is a long standing design classic that was recently breathed on by one J Ives Esq. I think you know which it is.

That is, when you go new... I actually earn money generally while upgrading (or sometimes just a side step trying something completely different) by buying second hand gear for a good price, and then sell it for the same if not more when I want to try something else. For this you do obviously should know the market and do a bit of (fair) negotiating.

Hi Tarun, this is a great review of a what seems great product. I admire the fact that they went for what works, rather than what the dogma dictates. So save your money on the balanced inputs, that can be put towards better quality of other components. I am no fan of the ever rotating volume knob that can do everything else under the sun. But if that is the best solution at this price point, and it shows in the results, then so be it. If I have to criticize something on the technology I would say the transformer is the weak link. (Perhaps that is why the get up and go lacks a bit) I look at it like this: 2 X 75 Watt @ 50% (estimated quick and dirty) is a 300W power requirement. The transformer seems to deliver an estimated 350VA which is barely enough, specially if it is not a purely resistive load. I am sure that if you would double the power of that transformer, you would transform (pun intended) the sound in a very positive way. I realize this is not a "cost no object" product. And it seems a wonderful product. But something has to be the bottle neck and that seems to be the transformer. In the looks department, the Accuphase is right up my street.

Excellent review and this sounds like a quite interesting amplifier. Perhaps such a neutral and resolving amp would do well with fullrange planar speakers such as QUAD or Magnepan. As for the style preferences you asked about, I personally like an unfussy but still classy look, such as Exposure or QUAD gear (there mainly the old 2 & 4 series) or 'studio chique' styling such as Audio Research of the 80s or the Revox gear of old.

I recently changed my B&W 804 D3 floor standers for the Audiovector QR7s, and they really improved everything about my system. I understand that room acoustics, gear pairing and wiring and tweaks all contribute, but I think a lot of people would be pleasantly surprised at what this speaker line can do. The QRs have now been replaced by the QRse series, so I can't compare them, but there are a lot of QRs still floating around at discounts.

Fair assessment as usual. More reviewers should be as balanced. Reading between the lines, it seems like the sweet spot most likely is to be found in the 925, the middle model in the Trilogy lineup. Accuphase, Luxman, Gryphon etcetera all seem to fall into that camp where the best "value" amp where you really get most of the sonic flavor of the house sound is the mid tier unit.

Musical Fidelity A1000 - still for me the best, the deep but not black gloss finish which was a layer on brass which gives it a lovely tactility in use, the lovely source switch feel and finally the glow of the two red eyes on the pre main and the one red eye on the power supply, seductive and mood setting at night rather than the piercing blue that is fashionable. Looking at the internals it's hard to understand why this costs £5,995. I'm an audiophile, but even I have to admit that high-end audio prices are just ridiculous sometimes. One can buy 4 Apple iMacs for the price of this. Is there really four times less parts costs, R&D, ect. in one Apple iMac vs one Trilogy 921? I think I'm becoming jaded in my older age. That is understandable. Parts and engineering should always be the primary indicator of quality. Parts quality is pretty easy to judge but engineering is more complex. A lot comes down to circuit design. As you move up to higher price points the balance of the equation changes. You pay more for the expertise of the designer than just merely the parts. The economics of small companies with a low turnover and high margin also need to be taken into account. Ultimately, everything should be judged on sound quality 😊👍

I Can’t judge how it sounds because I haven’t heard the trilogy, but I agree with some comments here: the internals are underwhelming to say the least - considering the 6k. Currently I have an atoll am300, a Hegel h190 and recently purchased a second hand Yamaha as2100 (1k 😂). The parts used, the capacitors, transformers etc it is not comparable. In my subjective opinion, and just analyzing the analog sections, the Yamaha is the best of the 3 so if the Hegel is close to the trilogy in terms of sound than nothing separates it from the Yamaha (which I don’t think is lean or bright or warm). The Yamaha new was 2k, the as2200 is 3.5k… it is almost half the price 😮
@justasimplefox11 ай бұрын
I somehow hope we can turn the tide a little with these comments. These prices are simply to high for what get, I have nothing against Trilogy but we have to stay critical. I would be much nicer to see more brands like Atoll, Norma, Leema, Audial,... at least they are somehow trying keep price value under ´control´. I must be nice to have to much money but even then I would refuse to spend money on these self proclaimed high-end companies, just to justify their ridiculous prices 🫢

I agree with you, but in all fairness, you need to consider inflation. In the last 2-3 years, it seems like prices have almost doubled. If I had known prices were going to be this out of control, I would have made some upgrades. Its not easy, but I have to keep reminding myself that the cost of making this stuff went up substantially. Trilogy is one of those ultra high end brands that you always expect to pay more for. There's absolutely no shame in buying other brands that offer high end performance but that are more value oriented. If you know what you're doing, you can get great sound for less money.

Hi i have a question. My room isn’t very wide about 2.6 meters but it js 6 or 7 meters long. I have dali oberon 7 which are floorstanders. How should i position them and how far away should i sit?

That speak might be a bit tricky in such a narrow room. Try placing along the long wall and place an absorber behind your head. If you struggle, you may want to check out my Patreon 😊

Probably biasing of the front end amplification stage. LED's or zener diodes are commonly used.

It could be for biasing but best to check with the manufacturer 😊

I purchase audio equipment to enable me to listen to music, reproduced the way I like to hear it. Styling, aesthetics, fit and finish are to me inconsequential. In fact, other than the speakers, all of my hifi gear is housed in a purpose built media cabinet, fronted with tinted glass doors. That having being said, non of my gear could be described as entry level. The style, aesthetics and fit and finish are impeccable, if not just a bit industrial. To be honest, you wouldn’t expect any less when you’re paying 2 months salary for each component. But the reason I house them behind tinted glass, is so that when friends, family or colleagues visit for a listening session, their ears are the only judge. The caveat, because there’s always a caveat, my preamp’s infra red remote control, is unable to penetrate that tinted glass!

When you say the 921 plays things safe, you're probably just hearing the limitations of your source. If you get an analogue source you will hear what the amp can do. As an ex-Trilogy dealer i may be biased tho😊

It isn’t the source. I am describing the sound relative to other products I have reviewed in this market segment 😊

@@abritishaudiophile7314 bottom line is your review is likely inaccurate. The other amps may make your digital source sound more lively but so what? At least try an analogue source, I'm sure you'll see my point.

About the styling of Trilogy 921, it is what could be called an industrial design. In fact, it is very ugly. On the technical side, this is integrated without an active pre, it has only the attenuator as volume control, and the gain is made by the power stage itself. As always, this is a very good interview. I hardly wait for the next one!

Sooner keep my Primare power and pre, dual mono and 135w per channel. You are paying for the name and the chassis.

@Sonofsun00111 ай бұрын
Not really, unless you have an acoustically treated room which is centred around optimising the hifi experience, spending this much on amp is pointless. The room is more important than a fancy name and chassis. @@abritishaudiophile7314

At what’s essentially a Seller’s market, high -end audio has gone beyond all rationale in proffering those paltry, and insulting 3, and 5 year warranties on units priced out of Earth’s orbit. At the 925’s price, one should expect 20 year or more, faultless performance years, with the firm standing right behind them.

I get offered a lot more products to review than I can manage, so I don’t need to be concerned about upsetting manufacturers. The reality is that a lot of HiFi produced these days is pretty good. I occasionally come across products that sound exceptional and some that are below par. If I don’t get on with a product, I return it to the manufacturer. Substandard performance can be due to poor engineering but can also be due to a defective sample or poor synergy with acoustics and other electronics. This is not the place to come if you want hyped up positive reviews or ones that slate products. Sensationalised reviews can be an effective strategy on KZbin but I don’t believe are an ethical way to operate. I just give an honest opinion about products I like explaining relative strengths and weaknesses 😊

I must be the only music lover who’s satisfied with my HiFi system and it’s probably not worth £3k. I’ve listened to some serious and very expensive HiFi systems and they’ve never impressed me to the point that I’d consider spending multiple thousands of pounds on them. I’ve recorded in studios that have cost as much as some of these very expensive systems and it seems foolish to me that people spend so much on HiFi. A fool and their money are easily parted
@alexg42848 ай бұрын
It is easier to fool someone, than to convince them they have been fooled. What system are you running? I’ve recently come to the same conclusion, happy with what I’ve got. I swapped some bits but found that where I gained in some areas I had compromises in other areas. Just gonna stick with it now and fiddle about with speaker positioning and room treatment!
