TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 120 bpm which gives the piece a very nice cheerful sounding pace. Be careful to aim for a good swing rhythm when playing the quavers and look out for the contrasting articulation from legato to staccato in the right hand phrases. Dynamics are straightforward and repeats are not required in the exam.

Wow! Wonderful! I recently bought the book for ABRSM Grade 5 Piano 2023 / 2024 because I thought I might be brave in 2023 and try and do the ABRSM Grade 5 Performance exam. I'm 67 returned to piano 2 years ago, after a very long break (since my 40s!) and took Grades 1, 2 and 3 when I was around 11/ 12 years old, plus Grade 4 in my 40s. I've started to learn this piece as I really like it and hoped to use it as one of my 3 pieces from the book, but now I've heard this, I can see I have a lot of work to do! But it's wonderful, thank you. When I was 11 / 12 years old, there was no internet and I was given lessons by an elderly lady at her bungalow and she got me through my first 3 grade exams, but there were no other resources like this so that you could listen to someone actually playing it over and over again. Of course my teacher at the time would play little sections, but usually only if I was making mistakes.

He is playing off tempo throughout. It is meant to be a swing piece but he plays it in straight 4/4 not swing.
