TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS ABRSM’s recommended tempo is for this piece is 80 bpm, although use of rubato (looseness of time) will be highly effective. A nice legato touch is required throughout, and a sensitive approach is needed in order to bring out the tenderness of the melody. Con Ped. is marked at the beginning, so be sure to work out an effective way of using the sustain pedal. Sometimes it might feel appropriate to pedal for a whole bar, other times you will need to pedal more frequently, depending on the harmonic changes in each bar. It would be wise to practise some of the left-hand bars separately in order to really secure the legato connections, especially given the stretched-out intervals in some of those bars. Dynamics are straightforward, but don’t be afraid to add a little more light and shade than what is written. There is no marked rit. at the end, although a slight slowing of the tempo on the final two bars would seem a nice way to finish.
