I asked him if crews ever showed up to help, he said yes but it was too late - he had already put out the fire. I was pissed that my dad put his life on the line but grateful he's okay. And the two large fires, at that time, used up a lot of water. I believe they had three 1 million gallon reservoirs available to service the hydrants and that got used up. By 3am the reservoirs were too low to assist even with water trucks being driven in to add to the reservoirs. All they could do at that point is stay clear and wait until the aircraft could help and that was four hours away. I promise you this was no ordinary wildfire. People don’t realize that the majority of house fires here are NOT those in the direct flame/fire line but they start with hot embers landing on nice and cozy little combustible spots, kindling so to speak, here and their, and then slowly growing, then quicker, then large, then engulfing. He’s right; put out the little ones and you save a house.

Why should tax money pay to rebuild homes that people knowingly built in high hazard areas? That insurance only covered because they were forced to? I would rather fund a war for national survival than pay to rebuild a rich guy's > million dollar house for the 3rd time...

@@HerpDerpNVYour mentality is what is wrong with America. His home was probably built before all of these contributing causes became an issue. Mismanagement by the elected leaders in LA and California are the reason he had to protect his livelihood. I completely admire this man for what he did. He implied that if there were some firefighters in his neighborhood, all the houses could have been saved; but, in areas where firefighters were fighting fires and saving homes, in some cases they ran out of water because they were taping so much water. Maybe in the future California should equip firetrucks with smaller hoses so they could fight more fires and save more houses when another one of these massive fires occurs. This man saved his home and neighbors homes with just a garden hose. Incredible feat by this older gentlemen; my hats off to you, sir.

I honestly think community should get train to handle fire in some degree so they can defend themself. It's tricky balance and could be hard since wife/kid has to evacuate, while husband stay to defend the neighbor hood.

Smaller hoses mean less pressure and less chance to smother the fire with water sufficiently to not reflare. And the trucks do carry water- even pumpers that hook up to hydrants so that they can start attacking the fire when they arrive. Amazing all the "back seat" firefighters who are appearing in this comments and on other videos. I did it as volunteer for several years, was amazed to learn how quickly it can spread from nothing to fatal, and how hot it gets even if you aren't right on top of it (This isn't the movies.) The scope of this fire is awful because of the winds. Australia went through this same situation several years ago- a lot of brush, drought, and high winds and the smallest spark from a vehicle or tool that normally would not cause anything can suddenly become a fire that spreads out of control within minutes.
@Sunshine-uz4cx11 сағат бұрын

@dmitripogosian508411 сағат бұрын
In some sense his technique was more productive. Such fires are spread (as recently Jasper Canada showed as well) to houses by flying ambers. So ignition points are small, and if under watch, can be extinguished with little water (especially if you presoak the house so that the roof is wet). Firefighters operate with high power hoses rather than spreading water thinly

I take my hat off to you, Sir. From one American on the opposite coast, you are the type of man that America was built upon. When faced with an obstacle, you did what you had to do, in spite of the government around you letting your community down. I would have tried to do the same thing in your situation. The sight of seeing flames and sparks all around was a test, and you passed it with flying colors. Hope your community can make it back. God Bless.
