Hey there, I'm a pretty experienced coder on GMS2 and want to watch these beginner vids for fun and maybe learn something super basic that I might not have noticed. One thing I noticed was I never knew u could even pull in sprites into a room with a layer called asset layer just for visual reasons such as decoration, because every time I just wanted to make decoration I thought I had to make an object of it to make it draggable into the room and the object obviously had no code in it since it is only for visual reasons which sounds kind of weird to me. This makes it a lot easier and neater since I don't have to keep duplicating every sprite that doesn't need code :). I had a question though about having an instance layer that carries objects vs an asset layer that carries sprites is if using an asset layer to place sprites is more efficient performance wise for the game vs using empty objects that carry a sprite because usually my games sometimes seem to have performance issues when I spam too much objects into a room for decoration and was wondering if making it a sprite in an asset layer would also improve that somehow if that makes sense. Luv ur vids so far though :D

An asset layer is significantly easier than empty objects. Even an object with no code still has dozens of built in variables that GameMaker has to keep track of, even if they don’t change. An asset layer is simply drawing something to the screen, which will always be faster and easier for the computer.

Hey! Love your videos, I’ve started making a game myself that’s all about wax. I was wondering if you would recommend new game developers learn a coding language like Python or Java before beginning game development, and if so what would be a good language to learn?

I recommend learning a stricter programming language like C#, C++, or Java. These languages require you to understand data types, casting, and a little bit more of how computers work. That’s important to understand, and then later you can disregard it in some languages like GML, Python, and JavaScript, but you’ll understand how it works and that will make it easier to debug All that being said, it’s ok to just dive into game dev. It is really programming and coding, nothing wrong with getting all your learning while making a game.
