At 62, I'm feeling the same way! However I do remember using the original Microsoft flight simulator, and bought subsequent versions throughout the years. Still a rookie, I find it awesome that you are here, gives me hope. Thanks for being here, sharing your age, proves that we're never too old!

Good timing. I just installed 2024 and quickly realised I need a PhD in engineering just to configure the controller! Starting at 2:16, one would surmise that "Lock" should be the setting for PC. Thanks as always for putting so much time and effort in making this video for us Jonathan!

Thank you! And Microsoft should thank you too. You just saved me from uninstalling 2024 and forgetting about it. Ive played all the flight sims from microsoft and others (im 60)...and this one by far has had me the most frustrated. Reminds me of when coca cola changed their flavor and of course it bombed. Dont fix it if it aint broken microsoft! lol

As I age, I get frustrated pretty quickly. I upgraded my desktop and got 2024. My two simple controllers - Saitek Pro Flight Combat Rudder Pedals and Saitek Extreme 3D Pro Stick didnt work the same as in 2020. I was on the verge of snowballing 2024 and then, hallelujah - your above video tutorial saved me. I am a 74 year old who enjoys the freedom in the air - thank you Sir! May the force be with you always.

Holy thank you so very much! You have no idea how lost I have been trying to get my new (to me) X-55 to work for me and I was not making any headway. You certainly have made a real difference to my Simming experiences moving forward. Seriously... thank you so much! Also, I'm 65 now and I'm going to keep flying here. Also, your videos are very easy to watch! Caio!

I had the brilliant idea to get a flight simulator for my twin sons, 13 years old. Realizing I had no clue what I need, you not only taught me the basics of getting started with the software itself, but taught me a bit about the equipment I need. Starting to wonder if my sons are the ones this gift is intended for or is it me. ;-). Looking forward to watching your videos and thank you for the clear, well organized instruction.

I just bought a high end computer for FS2024 (I needed it anyway for other things). I had no idea what to expect regarding a flight sim. Then I went down the rabbit hole of sticks/yokes/throttles and peripherals. Then I heard horror stories of configuring FS2024. I’m hoping with enough YT viewing time I can figure this out but holy cow it’s a bit complicated. Thank you for this!

One aspect I find not talked about very much is handedness. You have a left stick and right throttle which, as far as I know, mimics most real world aircraft that don't have a yoke. This would probably be the opposite for most people, especially if delving into space sims as well. Excellent video! As a complete beginner, I only just bought myself a couple of VKB sticks (left Omni as a throttle) and have yet to hook them up, but I feel this setup (right stick) would be more natural for a righty. Would love to know what people think.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Ай бұрын
I'm right handed :) It took me a while to re-learn when the airbus stick came out. Here's the thing - if you fly stick with your left hand, it frees your right hand up for the mouse and keyboard ;)

Thanks for this video. So, you spent the most of the time for the controller settings. Even I am not a beginner I spent a lot of time to have my settings like in 2020 to all my controllers. I think for someone who is Totally new in flying, he can spend hours to find the needed Funktion by name. So why could we be in the plane, highlight a knob, lever or axis by mouse and than have a teach in Funktion. Perhaps there can be some additional things to choose like to have this connection for all planes, invert, etc. My opinion to set the controllers like 'what you see is what you get' is the most effective one. All the best.

Hi thanks for this. I am using my logitec thrustmaster extreme 3 D pro I was using with FSX (did not play the 2020 version) and it is not working all that well. Especially for helicopters. Anyway, was wondering if you like the Airbus stick and quadrant you are using. I have seen it in the store but was hesitant to get it. Thanks for the feedback. Really enjoy your knowledge. Thanks again.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Ай бұрын
It really depends what aircraft you're using. I might end up getting a Honeycomb Bravo throttle quadrant at some point - purely because it has more levers on it. I know there are some new makes of controllers around though - so that might factor in too :)

This is an amazing tutorial, but I noticed a couple errors. You scrolled past the "Mixture Axis 0-100%" setting and didn't notice. You also missed the chocks in the walkaround. I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't paying close attention.

Question for a more advanced set up. I have a simple 3 axis throttle quadrant but I want to fly a twin turbo. I need one axis for throttle, one for prop pitch and one for mixture. To run two engines independent of one another, I need another set of axes so in the air I run them together from the one set. To start from cold and dark though, I must start the engines one at a time. How would I do that? I haven't played MSFS since FSX, and I was able to do it there by pressing a key to indicate which engine I was inputing to. So how I would I do it here? (As you might guess, I haven't yet purchased 2024. Sometime in January is the goal.)

Thank you for the very insightful video. Can I ask, as new to the flight sim world, I’m just about to buy an Xbox X. Would you recommend investing in a joystick etc or will the console controller suffice? If you would recommend buying peripherals which brand/type etc would you suggest? Many thanks, Damion
@Dimebonics04
@Dimebonics04 Ай бұрын
The control will work, but it is more immersive with a flight stick. I would recommend the Thrustmaster T flight hotas one with rudder pedals. For under $200 US it’s the best value in my opinion. I’ve had one for 2 years and around 500 hrs in the sim and it still works like the day I bought it. You can get it for around $100 without the rudder peddles, but your going to eventually want them . Especially if you get interested in helicopters. I first played with a Xbox controller and after about 2 hours I ordered the flight stick. I’ll put it like this , with the controller it feels like a xbox game. With a flight stick it feels like a Simulator. Hope this helps.

Hi Jonathan. Thanks for the advice and guidance in this video. After over a month since the release of 2024, what’s your honest opinion of the current state of the software release. I’ve held off purchasing for various reasons. Not least the major unresolved bugs and performance issues plaguing the release. Would be interested in your thoughts. Is it worth waiting till the dust settles or is it now in an acceptable and useable state development wise?
