To be fair, they were behind the white line. Just the wrong white line. There are two, creating a corridor for the horses to move along, the crowd went behind the first, not the second line, and responded immediately when the soldiers told them to move. The police are there for crowd control, but primarily to protect everyone present. The soldiers are quite perfectly capable of telling people to move and where to move to, so rather than rushing in and interfering with the soldiers duties, the police step back and let them get on with their job

The guy with the flag is obviously an off duty soldier and part of the regiment. If you notice he had to assist when the police did not do their job of crowd control. He was also allowed behind the scenes with his family.

It kinda depends on the situation. The police main job is to protect everyone, while the troops are responsible for controlling their duty station. There is a separation between the police' duties and the troop's, even around buckingham palace. Ordinarily the troops will let the police hand the crowd, but if you get too close, the police step back and let the troops deal with it. In this case, the whole area became the troops responsibility so rather than getting in their way, the police stepped back. The crowd was complying with the instructions, but there are two white lines and they simply didnt realize they were behind the wrong line. If the crowd had failed to comply with the troops orders, the police would have stepped in quite quickly

They were off duty guards by the look of it because they went into the guards area more than once. Even they're allowed a bit of fun and at least they did it calmly so they didn't upset the most laid back horse there is.

8:18 I would have hooted with laughter if the horse had gone into reverse or they got kicked. People are SO stupid. London is just awful now. It's great that they come to spend their hard-earned here..BUT... the lack of common courtesy is horrible to watch. Went along the South Bank and Jubilee Gardens and close to The Wheel last summer and it was like Armageddon, being physically pushed by mindless people and I'm not so young anymore. Awful. They are taken to Hyde Park for exercises which us directly across the street from the main stables and barracks. Also, very early morning the horses at the Horse Guards get exercised in St. James Park or on the empty city streets nearby.

The police are not there to manage the tourists, their role is security and safety of the public. At the start of the change they were on the footway observing the public outside. Comments about police are being made without knowledge of what risk intelligence may have been in place. The troopers are mor than capable of dealing with the tourists as they demonstrated. Also they are not MOD police, they are Metropolitan Police. The click bait title of the video is unforgivable. There was no chaos.

It's from an old ritual when fighting in wars. The riders could ride the horse half dismounted while still in action, but to let the horse know you were dismounting you would give a pat on the other side. It tells the horse to stay still.

It wouldn’t take much if they had two people come out AND STAY OUT to control the crowd during changeover. I’ve seen, time and time again, a lone soldier come out, tell the crowd to get behind the barriers and then walk back inside the gates. The crowd of course immediately disregard the instruction and mill around the horse and guard again. It’s quite ridiculous and shows a complete lack of thought that goes into supervising a smooth changeover🇦🇺🦘

You obviously don't read all posts, otherwise you would know that slap is communication between horse and rider. IT DOES NOT HURT THEM. This let's the horse know they are finished for the day. They don't have to put up with the idiots that persist in touching them. I went back to video and the pat on the neck doesn't even make the horse flinch. Zoomed in, and the Guard hits the saddle, not the horse. Even if they slap the horse, it doesn't hurt.

It's a signal to the horse that we are done an i am going to dismount. So horse will know an not move. If horse moved while rider was coming off it might case him to be hung in a stirrup an dragged.
