Several of my 'mates' are in the service. And genuinely some of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. This isn't the 18th century, using the term 'mate' when chatting amongst a group of blokes, isn't always meant to be literal. It's a friendly, less formal way to greet someone. I personally wouldn't want a copper calling me 'sir', or grovelling at my feet, like some sort of slave. They are just doing a job at the end of the day.

Uniform Policy (Surrey and Sussex) (1219) Appendix A Section 3.6 states that small badges/pins may be worn that are not associated with gangs or is intimidating. I think we would have a different opinion on this than most police
