I was struck by how much better these inmates were treated than many law-abiding citizens who get put in nursing homes for the crime of getting old. I used to volunteer at a nursing home, and the amount of space the death row inmates have, the privilege of having a pet... Nothing even close was afforded to the seniors I saw.

To everyone commenting on the cats which is a rare priveledge, the majority of cats that criminals have would have been put down in a "shelter" or saved from being drowned in a bag in a river as kittens by psychos. The selection process is also extremely in depth to make sure the pairing will benefit both animals. It has so many benefits to have pet insentives I won't bother listing them. If you think it's tough on a cat to be with someone who dotes over them 23/7 while ignoring huge cat meat industries in places like China you may need to expand your knowledge, reasoning and compassion yourself. I think pet programmes in prison have changed the infrastructure and saved more lives than most can fathom.

I also like how he doesn’t treat the inmates like they are less than human, even though they’re in prison for obvious reasons, he doesn’t talk to them like they’re animals or anything. @@thepowerman8952 Cutting the throat of a five year old girl is pretty medieval. He thinks about what he witnessed when he cut her throat. Imagine what he saw as she gurgled with a horrified look on her face as blood spurted across the room from her little heart pounding 90 miles per hours as she tried to scream for her mother but could not because her wind pipe was cut. It takes a minute or so to die, that minute must have seemed like a life time. She most likely witnessed her mother going through the same process. You can't rehabilitate a man who would do something like that. The money it cost to keep this monster under lock and key burns up every dime 20 taxpayers pay each year. Wonder how the victims family members feel knowing the guy has a tv, a pet, exercise eqt, three squares a day knowing their loved ones in rotting in the ground. I don't like the idea of capitol punishment either but understand why some do. If that guy did that to my sister and niece I'd want him to have get the same punishment he doled out to innocent people. Perhaps an idealist could forgive him but I'm not an idealist.

I’ve seen several of your programs and they’re all well done. As a nurse I cared for several inmates in the regular hospital and I must say - they were my best patients. Polite, grateful for anything I did for them and I tried to reciprocate by talking with them to encourage them to be the best person they could be and to use all the educational resources that correctional facility might offer. I know at least one of the prisoners was doing time for murder and he was about the same age as my son who was around 19 at that time. He was African American and he and I talked quite a bit - I told him I understood that he probably didn’t have the advantages that my own children had had so I wasn’t judging the decisions that led him to where he currently was. By the time he was to be discharged, he told me was going to look into what the place offered to get an education. He told me he wanted to be able to travel when he got out and I told him getting that education would go a long way to making that dream a reality. I don’t know if any of what I talked about with those mostly young men really made impression but the cycle has to be broken. I still occasionally think about them. I remember one of them wanted me to become a regular visitor and sadly, I told him I would not be able to do that. And not because he wasn’t a worthwhile person but because I’d be moving on down the road so to speak as a travel nurse. I don’t know. Seems like if our government spent more time, effort and money, perhaps we could find some of the root causes that lead to violence and crimes that occur with that. Prevention might cost more in the beginning but surely would cost less in the end.

YES! I love Trevor McDonald. He’s so calm, concise, humble, sharp, knows how to build rapport, and asks the questions we truly want the answers for. Mata Hari was never told the date of her execution. It was standard practice of the French not to tell the condemned when they are going to die. I don't think not knowing the date of the execution leaves the condemned with a "black cloud over their heads" it is more likely that the condemned adjusts to the new normal until they are told that they are about to die.

Sometimes I wonder if to them it’s like how it is for us when we squish a baby bug. Not the best feeling to have to do it, but a means to an end. One time I accidentally vacuumed up a spiders nest under my couch and the momma spider was running around frantically trying to find her babys. I just .... it’s just .... I’m sorry because I have empathy. But then another time i vacuumed up a web with spiders on purpose because I was too lazy to relocate them. In that moment, my energy was more important to me than them even though I’m taking their life.. That’s probably how it feels to be one of these child murderers. One more moment in life when we make a selfish decision. In their case, they made not only selfish, but also very stupid decision with bad repercussions for them and everyone involved.

Baer's capital punishment sentence was overturned and he was resentenced to life in prison. I'm like Mr. McDonald in that I've always been against the death penalty but I struggle and even feel challenged with that belief when I hear stories like this. My heart goes out to the loved ones of the victims...I can't begin to comprehend what they go through.

Ok, I didn't see scissors in THIS video; but in the follow-up video Sir Trevor did when he returned 5 years later, a different barber is featured. THAT barber did show scissors, and even mentioned he feels safe because he has them. There's an old joke about a new prisoner who is getting the required haircut when he comes inside. The barber is very chatty, and talks nonstop while he works. When he finishes, he asks the man what his crime was. The offender says, "My old barber talked too much and it got on my nerves. One day, I grabbed the scissors and stabbed him to death."

They did a follow up on Frederick Baer. He got life with no parole in the end as he had his death sentence rescinded. He gets harassed by the prisoners, spat at, bleach put in his food etc. He's better off alive and looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life as death is an easy escape, I'm not gonna sugar coat it!!!

When I worked as a food service office I had an inmate come to me saying he found a kitten out in yard. He wanted something to feed him . I gave him food for the kitten. There not allow pets. I didn't turn him into the guards. An hour later a guard came to me asking for food for a kitten an inmate snuck in. I said sure . I laughed. The inmates brought dirt in in there pockets to put in a box for litter. The cat that nobody would admit existed.

I was in homeless temporary accommodation and hostel, I was forbidden to have my cat and grandson , f that, I hid them till I got a permanent home. Homeless in Scotland get no human rights. After working 20 years in a male Max Security prison, I change my mind about execution. I witnessed an execution of a man, after watching I changed my mind. 1. There are innocent ppl on death row who need legal assistance. 2. And the best PUNISHMENT is letting them live behind walls/bars for the rest of their life. Make them live every day without family and friends, never knowing what's going on in society, this is the best punishment. What he said about suicides is very true, many can't handle being locked down.

for the record, his death sentence was overturned and he was re-sentenced to 2 consecutive life terms without the chance of parole. The re-sentencing resulted from a plea agreement in which the victims' spouse requested life without parole.

Agreed, what he said was confusing because he said he "lost it". Didnt lose it quick enough.

We are assuming here that it really went down like this. But it may simply be a story he came up with to mitigate his sentence in court, and then stick with it even after he got the death penalty, who knows. There is probably a decent chance the other guy never threatened his family.
