There is also a movie about a discovery journey on the Amazon River, where a complete steam radar ship was hoisted up a hill and lowered on the other side of that hill. In the Amazon jungle. Lots of blood, sweat and fears. But it was based on a true explorer looking for some way to get across South America by ship.

Most fur trade loads were measured in Troy rather than in Avoirdupois so that each of the required two packs to be carried actually weighed 74 lbs rather than 90 lbs. Having portaged 150 lb loads, I can assure that an average man in good shape can carry this over a reasonably good trail if helped with the loading. The big problem with carrying a load like this with a tump is not the head, neck or back but buckling at the knees on uneven ground. The York boats were meant to be skidded on their keels using four men to a side for steadying the boat while a much larger crew pulled it by rope. This makes for fast travel. The frame shown in the video creates considerable drag on the skid logs making the boat hard to pull.

A burning question since I started watching. How on earth did these boats make it upriver? Given the difficulty of going down river it would appear to be a gargantuan task to take these heavy boats upstream.
@justbelove4 күн бұрын
I wondered the same. Without researching the answer, I wonder if the York men traveled on smaller canoes upstream, and received available York boats made from the interior fur trade posts; this way, the York boats didn't have to go upstream?
@pmenchions4 күн бұрын
@justbelove Later they mentioned that the actual boat crews were larger and several boats traveled together. So, the upstream leg had a lot more manpower than we see here.
@User_1dashzero2 ай бұрын
A man in 1840 would not carry a pack like that. In somewhat rare occasions yes maybe. But for the most part each man packed what they could carry and what they needed. The heaviest packing would’ve been hauling the meat, but most trappers went after small game and used horses to travel. Some of his training ideas don’t make much sense to me but ok lmao People back then were more acclimated to that lifestyle. They weren’t stronger than us, hell most of them might’ve been a little weaker due to food sources. We like to give them credit for being unbelievably strong, but the reality is we just aren’t acclimated to hard work anymore.

No. A reality show is a prearranged outcome. Pawn Brokers stages all transactions before filming. Storage Wars prearranges inserting merchandise in lockers to keep the audience interested. All the other ones are scripted and rehearsed before shooting. This adventure could have ended at any time due to the extreme efforts required, and sure could have ended in disaster many times.

The couriers de bois would NEVER have carried so much weight, supposedly 182 lbs or more, concentrated in just one section of their pack, and certainly not as low down as the poor fools in the first 4 minutes are doing. The real packs were much larger and distributed the weight of the load evenly across the whole back. To concentrate it just on the hips is sheer stupidity.

The only thing you need to do next, is to accept the LORD JESUS CHRIST as your savior. John 3:16 Context 13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
