Dilapidated factories in my home town are renovated to provide luxury, gated accommodation for NIMBYs. There is no reason to build over our green spaces. @shelleyphilcox4743Күн бұрын
We definitely need more houses. When a house is up for sale it's because people are moving from one place to another, unless it's because someone died. I dont imagine you think people just sell their home and decide to live on the street or a field instead or that every property being sold is because someone died? We have too few homes and people are living with their families or in HMOs into their 30s because they cant afford to buy, even though they have decent jobs. We have massive under supply and huge competition driving up costs, particularly in the south, where wage differences dont even come close to property prices.
@deja-view1017Күн бұрын
My daughter studied Property Development and Planning at uni, and her thesis was on the effects of Airbnb on gentrification. What was totally shocking was the amount of properties built for people to actually live in that had been turned into Airbnbs (whole apartment blocks in Tower Hamlets, for instance). Add that to the '2nd home' problem in places like the westcountry and throw in the ridiculous immigration rates and you have a recipe for disaster.
@shelleyphilcox4743Күн бұрын
@@deja-view1017 I lived in Edinburgh and the number of Air BnB lets definitely had a detrimental affect on the tenement with people making a noise, ringing your buzzer by mistake in the wee hours, and the wider community, even to the point of what type of goods are stocked in local shops. Once one apartment goes air BnB it can start a chain reaction...people wanting to move out and then that being bought and made into an air BNB too until the whole building goes over to holiday rental. It does reduce the homes available for living in and affect pricing. However, there is also the fact that in the UK holidays are expensive, who can afford a hotel for 2 weeks, especially as hotel availability is reduced as so many are leased out for other purposes, so self catering is where people turn to and that creates a bigger market...also profitable. Large scale air bnb in small.areas does really negatively affect local communities. However, even if you stopped it, it is still nowhere enough to fill in the deficit in our housing needs, but it would help a bit.

Personally I think we need a mixture of solutions. We need it in cities and towns, but we also want housing in the country. People want to be able to afford and live near their family and friends in villages and small towns too. Families are broken up when they cant live near each other. Im also in favour of people having a garden of their own to access sunlight, kids be able to play in the garden, grow your own veg. Stacking families up in inner city high rise rabbit hutches isn't my idea of quality of life. Any of you ever had to hoik babies, push chairs and the shopping up multiple flights of stairs...its not fun. How easy do you think it is to access the countryside with a family when you live in the city? Victorians could build vast numbers of houses at lower cost because we had a smaller population, land was cheaper and there was no health and safety regulation or decent employment protection...nor was there such intense regulation for planning permission which adds to costs. I am concious of needing land for food production, it is critical, and respecting and preserving our stunning countryside, but we are where we are with an enormously expanded population and need a variety of housing people can afford and have some decent quality of life.

we do have plenty of houses (not necessarily homes) because half of london has been snapped up by arabs and russians who are just sitting on property waiting to make a killing when the price goes up . we have a lot of 3 bedroom houses with a lonely pensioner in . we have rich people buying holiday homes in cornwall or wherever and only using them 2 weeks a year and all this kind of thing is winding labour up , emotions brewing beyond the brim because they just see it all as a waste of space that could be used for housing a million immigrants a year :)

Has he asked our permission to do that ? The public servants are setting us up to loose a battle against us . Wake up.
