I’m from Amish Country in Pennsylvania. The Amish have had some rare genetic diseases due to marriages within a relatively limited and isolated population over the past 2-3 centuries. They now strictly control marriages by tracking family histories. Updated books are devoted to this. Mennonites do the same and spend a lot of time studying their books as their strategize how to get their children married. Same as the basis for the Mormons having the most extensive genealogy records in the US but they’re allowed to use computers. The Amish and Mennonites also transport their young people in convoy trips to communities in other states and even countries. It takes a lot of discipline, organization and some money to avoid too much intermarriage in groups that insist on setting themselves apart by religion and ethnic lines. I’ve been told of some rich Muslim families who purposely have their young members marry in order to keep the wealth in the family. A friend attended a marriage in Pakistani where she told me this was the case. The UK needs to legislate against first cousin marriages. The couple can marry abroad but the taboo needs to be legally established inside the UK nonetheless. It’s the State’s responsibility to protect children’s interests. Not being born with defects that can easily be avoided should be included in that protection.

We thought Netflix would have cancelled them both pre this doco but they didn’t I am therefore not convinced they will post another disaster. The best thing people can do is continue to cancel subscriptions to Netflix
