I think 99% of people wouldn't have an issue if the player spoke like Rodri and actually used the time to rest, not travel to a different country for a night out while wearing a mask like a criminal or someone ashamed of what he was doing. Some honesty from some big stars would actually start a serious conversation about burnout. Hell I would freaking respect it if a player had the balls to say "Hey, the national team doesn't pay my salary and I wanna rest and have some fun. Last time I went to a disco was ages ago" The people from his country would hate him but I would freaking love him, same as Koulibaly who said he was going to the Arab league "just for the money" (like everyone but actually being honest about it)
@underman7723 күн бұрын
As a French person it's not really that simple. There already was a bit of controversy when a became captain after Lloris, when most of the public opinion was that it should've been Griezmann. Then Griezmann announced out of the blue that he's retiring from the National team, so all of a sudden everyone is talking about the captaincy again, and this is when Mbappe decides to skip the international window, which is not very "captain like" in the first place, and says it's to have a "mini pre season", only to immediately be spotted in a night club. He could've been honest and say "I'm gonna take this one too rest" but he didn't. He's the captain of the French team, so he has more responsibilities than most imo. Anyway it's still blown out of proportions, but he's definitely in the wrong here imo.
@Jonathanizer23 күн бұрын
Nothing you said makes this "not really that simple". If the og team captain isn't there, then another player takes on that role. Easy as that. Nothing changes in this situation, whether he sits at home or is out talking to women in a club.

Exactly, especially considering that after he rejected the call-up due to "injury", he then proceeded to come off the bench for Madrid against Lille and start for them against Villarreal. The part about going to a club though - yeah that's dumb, who cares, a muscle injury shouldn't stop someone going to a club. @amigaway22 күн бұрын
I highly doubt the polemic would be any different if he was spoted in a madrid nightclub. You'll be hard pressed to justify the idea that Mbappé si somehow antipatriotic for doing this : dude's been basically top 3 players for France in the previous two world cups and is the current team captain. Not showing up for two nations league game to rest after being injured earlier in the season seems reasonable - noone cares about this competition. In addition, the Madrid staff said he wasn't fit to play. The reason why this pauses a problem in France is twofold : - 1 he is the captain but the entire nomination has been criticized as misguided because it caused a divide within the french team that can still be felt today : recently it's been speculated to be one of the key reasons for Griezmann's international retirement as he also wanted the role ----> It's a bad look because he isn't just a player but the team captain. - 2 Deschamps used to react differently when players didn't show : he's essentially blacklisted very strong players over the years for missing out on team competitions and friendlies without good reason. The fact he now backs Mbappé seems to be another demonstration of his weakening hold of the french locker room. The french team is currently bordering a crisis (lots of key locker players left in the last few years and the team lacks leaders + Deschamps lack of planning during Euro has created yet another divide between the coach and the players). Basically : noone would be that bothered by it usually but the combination of Mbappé being the captain of the team and the french team being currently nearing a crisis makes it an issue.

@@amigaway If he Mbappé was photographed in Madrid, it would not be as big a deal. Travelling to another country (that doesn't even share a border) kills the idea that he's resting Past sporting achievements doesn't justify what he's done. I think the only legitimate argument for Mbappe at the very least just being present but not playing is that their is some very French team drama ongoing in the national team and arguably they could use some leadership. Which also happens to be the dramatic scenario, about who is captain so in that context maybe he should've just been there just for the games and be on the bench. Otherwise who cares let him do whatever he wants, plus that rest will benefit France in the long to medium term.
