1. You forgot to pin your comment. 2. The video was only uploaded/playable in 720p and below. 3. I'm subscribed to SaskDutchKid and 10th Gen as well as you plus I watch others, I've never seen anyone put drain pipe in their clamp/bunk. I'm not a farmer, so my opinion means nothing, but everyone I watch always stresses that you have to make sure the grass/silage is compressed as much as possible to squeeze out all the air so it doesn't rot or go mouldy. Reintroducing air through the pipe seems to defeat all the compacting you did, unless there's a more important reason you did that. No one mentioned runoff so I don't know how they deal with that, other than maybe the concrete floor of the bunk is sloped to drain it properly. Just my 2 cents, have a great day.

Solutions and help, that's what comments are for. If you would like to have the drain pipe without risk of air getting back, there is a way. I am an engineer and part time (very) small farmer. My solution to the drain/air conundrum is a U bend (you need somewhere to allow the neccesary pocket below pit floor level) Or just put the open end in a bucket of water with the top at floor level. So long as there is a fluid seal over the end of the pipe. Water will drain out but air can't get back up the way :) Liked the projects but grand to be seeing you farming again :)

Try sidesheets Tom. Hang them up before you start, fill your clamp as per normal, once she’s full fold your side sheets over the top as far as they will go and then top sheet as normal. Will eliminate a huge amount of that waste 👍🏻

God that was a lot of grass, just shows that if you put the work in, the results speak for themselves. When you mowed it, it looked really thick so am not surprised the chopper was having an issue. And those contractors, they certainly earn their money. 👍

A most excellent chopping video. Always love a good chopping episode. How about putting a one way flapper on the drain tubes. Won’t stop all the air, but should stop most of it. Also, you might be able to retro fit an air ride seat in your tractor. Way cheaper than a new tractor.

Hi Tom, I am watching your Videos for such a long time, and there is one thing i am always a bit confused about. You are always talking about the quality of the grass, but if it comes to compacting the clamp you are so lazy. I mean not at the end, while chopping! I am from Austria and, obviously we are practicing so many things in a completely different way, but for us the most important thing is to compact the clamp as much as we can. Sometimes even the chopper has to stop, which is clearly more expensive, but overall we have absolutely 0 waste of silage. And another crazy thing is your pipe in the clamp. Never seen this before on any farm in our whole country! We always put sheets on the walls, which is in our opinion the best way. Greetings from Austria, have a great day! Keep pushing!
