Surprised no one mentioned that this was key to a major motion picture scene “Say Anything,” where John Cusak played it for a young woman in her driveway and a boom blaster over his head while she listened from her room upstairs. Very romantic, touching and poignant scene rarely found in 80s teen movies.

It's funny how you described this song because this is my go to when I need to release my emotions. Not crying per se, but to just let go. I usually listen to it while driving with no place to go. I love this song especially the extended mix. This song speaks to me.

I'm so glad that you discovered Peter. I have loved him since his Genesis days. It takes a certain talent to be able to leave phil collins unnoticed in the background on drums. Try snapshot...he paints such a picture of a twisted soul fantastic story, fantastic atmosphere of suspension and all in a few minutes. Please give it a go Anton. And obviously with kate Bush don't give up is brilliant too. Great reaction as usual honest and genuine. Thank you.

This is a beautiful song and was played instead of the wedding march at the wedding of a cousin of mine back when it came out. They started the first half of the song then the wedding party started down the aisle at the second half. It was actually kinda cool! Peter Gabriel definitely fit into the "oddness" of the 80s videos well! Haha. Also check out his earlier 80s songs like "Shock the Monkey" and "Games Without Frontiers" - which is my favorite. That one is soothing too, I think you'll love the song. Again, his videos were odd - as were MOST 80s videos!

indeed, this song is 1 of his standout masterpieces.. interestingly, his most recent remastered/re-release of his "So" album moved this song to the end of the album w/a completely different version - embracing more of an African interlaced overtone! for me, personally on that album: the songs "Mercy Street" & "Don't Give Up" (w/Kate Bush) are quite emotionally moving during that album's original release.. his long awaited follow-up "Us" was emotionally impactful (working through a divorce, i believe), from it, my most favorite song of his: "Love To Be Loved"! a decade later, his album "Up" was vastly unique from song to song.. i recall "Growing Up" as a fascinating deep-thought presentation (w/underspoken lyrics like: "Well on the floor there's a long wooden table. On the table there's an open book. On the page there's a detailed drawing. And on the drawing is the name I took." & "More Than This" whose lyrics plus its musical progression (& layering) bring me to a heightened sense of feeling the same emotion conveyed: "there is more than this..." hard to describe, but somehow he describes it perfectly through music! thank you for your reaction!

This song was released in Aug of 1986 when I was only 13. Fun Fact...if ya ask Justin Furstenfeld from Blue October who his favorite singer is and he will proudly say Peter Gabrial. 2 songs from Blue October's last album were recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studio. The songs are "I Will Follow You" and "This Is What I Live For"

As you speak about merging and becoming one, both in love and in spirit, I think of Gabriel's lyrics for Genesis' album 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. By the end of the album the central character (Rael) finally understands what this love is and the result is pure Nirvana in the final song. I won't give away the chaotic story of personal enlightenment but the final song 'it', I believe, is Gabriel relating what it feels like to know you are one with the universe. Most fans think it is a drug trip, but I think it is centrally, if vaguely Zen Buddhism. (curious if you have listened to the album)

Honestly, the entirety of this album, So, is simply phenomenal. My all-time fave Gabriel track comes from it, Big Time, which is just a perfect example of Pete cutting loose and having fun with a really funky, high energy track. Solsbury Hill is also a stone-cold classic, rightly the big hit which kickstarted his solo career, as is Here Comes the Flood (the quieter, more stripped back version on Shaking the Tree rather than the original - Gabriel himself wasn't too happy with the first try, and much prefers this version, and we're all agreed that ir's FAR superior). Then there's I Have the Touch, Games Without Frontiers, Signal to Noise, Downside Up, The Tower That Ate People, Out Out (from the Gremlins soundtrack), San Jacinto, Mercy Street, Father Son, Games Without Frontiers, Shock the Monkey, Steam, I Grieve, Blood of Eden (with Sinead O'Connor), Digging In the Dirt and The Veil. While the Earth Sleeps, a crazy trancy dance track from the mid-90s that he did with Deep Forest, is also well worth checking out.

All of his videos are chock full of symbolism. I don't remember which of his you've done other than this one, but Big Time, Sledgehammer, Shock the Monkey are all very symbolic and have very cool videos. This one, Red Rain and Solsbury Hill are different types of songs, slower but all awesome. My favorites of his are probably Solsbury Hill, Big Time, Shock the Monkey, with this and Red Rain close behind. I agree with the other commenter that Peter Gabriel is far above those you mentioned in sheer talent and creativity. Impeccable instincts as far as what to do with lyrics/videos/musically. I can totally relate to your emotions feeling like a hurricane for a few days as mine have been that way for three weeks now! Plus, I've had to deal all day most days with complete incompetence for my dad's stuff, and I have to organize, pack and move on this Thursday. I feel stretched to my absolute limit, and honestly, worry for my physical health. What I do is take a few minutes where I can to come here or other social media and forget it all. If you can take a few minutes to escape, do it whenever you can. Great reaction as always.

I agree with Katia M.. it’s rare that a live version is as good as the studio version, but the live version of this song from the Secret World Live concert dvd is every bit as good, and maybe even better imo. In fact, that entire concert is phenomenal and Paula Cole sings backup, which makes it even better. Check it out!!! 🙂

I got to see this performed live on the So tour in LA in December of '86. Best concert I ever attended and it's not close. Gabriel is absolutely magical on stage. As others have mentioned, the Secret World Live performance is a must-see/hear. The whole concert was filmed as a movie so the sound engineering is impeccable for a live performance. And the cast of performers he assembled for that tour was incredible. Rumor has it this song is about Rosanna Arquette.. which if true would be pretty incredible. "Rosanna" by Toto was about her too. 2 huge 80's hits inspired by relationships with the same actress? Amazeballs.

It would be gr8 if you could listen/see "In Your Eyes" from the Secret World Live" concert from 1994. Peter has many musicians performing with him, and it is awesome! Peter is one-of-a-kind. He incorporates music & musicians from different lands and cultures into all his music. Anything from his "So" album is gr8, & certified triple platinum. "Sledgehammer" is another gr8 one of his.

IMHO, When Peter Gabriel left Genesis(1975) and then embraced the Fairlight CMI digital synth.(1979) he became the artist we love today. He broke many sound barriers and his experimental journey yielded so many amazing and memorable songs. Much less creating a production company that promoted so may World Music artists. Cheers Anton.
