My eldest brother and i have discussed what has to have been the most beneficial band split ever. Genesis was doing ok with Peter as lead vocalist, but he and the rest had stylistic disputes and he left. Not too long after Genesis, now with Phil Collins doing lead vocals and drums, skyrocketed. Peter was able to do his more eclectic music and he too soared. The Phil also rose to unbelievable heights. My bro and discussed how if that they had never split we would have missed out on so much incredible music.

The Genesis years with Gabrriel saw the band hit its artistic peak. All the players were outstanding and contributed. When Phil came in to Drum and sing backup the band reached its height. After Peter left, Collins did double duty as lead singer. The Trick of the Tail album was a relief to all the fans who thought it would fold without Peter. They did a few good works before the pop music took over. Peter went on to continue to create, his first solo album was sketchy His albums became dark. Every so often a brilliant song would emerge. Always experimenting Peter found his form and to this day continues to create and share his art.

The entire Gabriel catalog is essential, always fascinating work. "Solsbury Hill" means a lot to many people, he wrote it about leaving the band Genesis in 1975, the track was released in 77. It's about walking away from a situation where one feels trapped. "Red Rain" is about climate issues, or back in 86, the fears about acid rain, when the ozone layer was thinning out.

Peter Gabriel was Lead Singer for the Prog Rock band Genesis up until he left for a Solo career in 1976 abouts ( at which point Phil Collins moved from drums to lead vocals). Solsbury Hill is about his decision to move on.

The gates to my personal music heaven are flanked by Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Peter Gabriel's signature sound features heavy bass and percussion, electronic grooves mixed with African elements and big-tent-revival bombast, all thrumming under the evocative, metaphorical lyrics. And of course, that voice ❤

Finally someone reacting to Red Rain. Peter was frontman (and co-founder of) in Genesis from 69 to 75 before Phil Collins (his then bandmate and drummer) took over singing when Peter left. Peter has a history creating characters in Genesis by dressing up in the craziest outfits and changing his voice.

It's a big Yes Please from me, more Peter Gabriel would be wonderful. One of my favourite artists and maybe my favourite voice ever. He would listen to a lot of world music to get different percussion and rhythms, then write songs around them, it's why he used drum machines in a lot of his music. Also a great person, he's done incredible work as a human rights activist. Complex guy. ❤

Peter Gabriel is my favourite artist. You can't go wrong doing a deep dive into his music. Some recommendations: Mercy Street, Here Comes the Flood, Digging in the Dirt, Signal to Noise (VH1 Live version), Don't Give Up, I Have the Touch (Phenomenon soundtrack), Biko. The Secret World Live concert and his movie scores Passion and Long Walk Home are excellent.

Other people have suggested it, but I strongly encourage you to listen and watch the performance of In Your Eyes from his Secret World Live tour. While you will recognize the song, it is different at probably double the length with quit a bit more added to it that what you heard on the album. It is one of the best live performances that I have ever seen (well, recorded live performance). The added vocals, instrumentals and movement just make this one truly amazing. You definitely won't be sorry even though you have already heard the original album recording - it really is just so much better. I say this as someone who almost always prefers listening to studio recordings rather than recordings of live performances. (There are multiple live recordings - you want the one with 28 million views)

I was familiar with "Sledgehammer" growing up because it was played a fair bit on MuchMusic (Canada's equivalent to MTV) and always made those "best music videos of the '80s" lists. But it took me a while to realize just how brilliant a songwriter Peter Gabriel really is. These four songs, for instance, are all gems. My favourite is Solsbury Hill ... to borrow a comparison you once used in another reaction, it sounds like a whole coming-of-age film collapsed into a single pop song. The curiously lettuce-heavy music video is obviously not from 1977 though... I can't seem to find when exactly the video was made, but apparently it uses footage from a short film called "Cabbages" released in 1995.

Such a great and interesting artist. As you have no doubt surmised, Peter has always been influenced by and supportive of what is often referred to as "world music". And indeed his live band and concert performances are quite the multi-cultural experience. And yes, "Shock The Monkey" has long been one of my personal favorites. Believe it or not, it got a lot of play in the gay clubs back in the day. Which reminds me, are you getting back around to the Pet Shop Boys soon ? Thank you thank you thank you for doing more Peter Gabriel. You picked some of my favorite songs for this. In future ones, I would highly recommend SanJacinto. And for live tracks, I plus one the recommendation for anything from the secret world live tour. It had Paula Cole as a backing vocalist directly before she became famous in her own right. It’s fantastic, start to finish. In fact, if you ever wanted to review the whole concert, you absolutely could not go wrong there. Other stand out favs of mine are Shaking the Tree, Digging in the Dirt, Come Talk to Me, I Have the Touch… oh I could keep going on forever.

Great picks & I loved your reaction...& you "got" the song better than I have in decades of listening to it!! I've read the song is about him dealing with leaving Genesis. Solsbury Hill has been one of my all time faves since it came out...10 years after it came out, I went to Great Britain on my honeymoon, & climbing up Solsbury Hill in Edinburgh while singing this song was very cool. It's also handy as the best earworm antidote ever. "In Your Eyes" has to be one of the great romantic songs of all time. And Peter Gabriel's videos are always quite the visual feast! I'm one of the weirdos who loved Genesis before AND after PG left, & his solo work. Amazing artist(s).

It is surprising to me that most Peter Gabriel reactions tend to focus on the handful of hits which are generally the least compelling from his catalogue. He is one of the most innovative and impactful artists living today. His 1980 release (melting face cover) was radical, the drums were thunderous and sparse with no cymbals or high-hats, the vocals were punctuated with short refrains from every direction with Peter screaming through a blender or distortion box, the bass featured the Chapman stick, a ten stringed instrument that is played by tapping and striking the frets, the guitars were played by Robert Fripp, extremely distorted and atonal, hard-panned left and right. It was a mad exploration that set the new standard by which artists of the 80s and 90s who pushed the boundaries were measured by. In 86 when he released SO, the fruits of the experimentation still came through, even on the commercial, more accessible tracks. His strongest solo albums: (the untitled melted face), Security, SO and US.
