The thing about this number is, not only is it an epic tale and a venerable classic, but in this case it was also completely unexpected. In this performance, it was the encore of the concert, and keep in mind they had been going for three hours already. Everybody wanted to hear this song, but nobody expected them to play it because it's such a technically complex number. But there they went, and they absolutely killed it to give the most memorable ending to one of the most memorable concerts of the century. Dire Straits at their peak, this won't be surpassed anymore, ever.

I was at Hammersmith for this gig, 42 years later, its still up there! I was 18 and thought this was normal, its not, its outstanding, the best! It was the end of a very long tour, its such a complex piece that we didn't think they'd play it, which is why everyone got so excited! Back then the reviews of the concerts came out days, not minutes after the concerts, so we had no idea what the playlist would be. One thing that is really noticable is that even after an epic tour is that they're not only talking to each other, they're loving playing and each others company. I mean, we all know what Mark can do, but Alan Clark's keys was just so great and you can't do the song without the bass playing talents of John Illsley, the backing guitar of Hal Lindes, all stitched together by Terry Williams on the drums. The whole band were so tight, amazing. For me Terry Williams was an unexpected star, world class epic drumming for over 3 hours! I was privileged to be there, although you don't appreciated it at the time, especially at that age and we are so lucky that its the highest quality recording of the time to enable us all to enjoy it Another great reaction Aileen❤❤

I've got the Alchemy album on my 14th birthday and 'Wish you were here" 2 years later in 1989 to listen to real music... now I have the DVD and the memories. I've managed among others to see EC, McCartney, the Boss, Billy Joel and ZZ Top several times, but I am still kicking myself for not going to Mark's "Sailing to Phili" tour although I liked the album. I saw Dire Straits at the Brighton Centre in 1982, and I have been to many concerts over the years, but that one had the best sound production that I've ever heard at any concert. They were phenomenal. Six months before that, the Falklands War started, and being in the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, I was shipped out there to fight at Goose Green and Wireless Ridge, where I lost some very special friends. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits always reminds me of those friends, and I try to find a quiet moment from time to time to listen to the song and remember them. R.I.P. My brothers.

The album version is even longer, more than 14 minutes. Mark Knopfler wrote this when Dire Straits was touring in the US, the bus was going down US route 24(AKA Telegraph Road) in Michigan into Detroit. Mark was reading the book "The growth of the soil" at the time and he put the 2 together into this song.

Saw Mark Knopfler live in 2010 in Oberhausen (Germany) and he played Telegraph Road there too. In the intro you could hear a needle fall to the ground, although there were about I guess 10-15.000 people there. Absolutely goosebumps. He even sat on a bar chair the whole concert, cuz he had back problems and his doctor advised him "No disco-dancing". Awesome concert, cuz it FELT as if he played in my living room (although it was a rather big venue). Living legend... Greets from Germany as always!

One of few songs where i still remember when and where i heard it for the first time. A friend had his drum kit set up in a huge room, with nice natural wooden floor, huge windows, that usually was used for meditations (it was an alternative community thing, his father was involved in). A stack of matresses in the corner, he handed me the cd and told me i had to listen to this while he went somewhere else for a while. So i grabbed a matress, placed it in the middle of the room, the cd in the wonderful high end hifi system they had there, and then just lay there, starring up in the night sky through the roof window. And then Telegraph Road happened, what an experience.

This concert had several extended arrangements of their hits up to that point. "Alchemy" the live album may have been a highlights collection, but it kept great versions of "Once Upon a Time", "Sultans of Swing" and "Tunnel of Love". This was such a great bookend to this era of Dire Straits. When the following studio album "Brothers In Arms" came out, there was some new guitar tones and a massive world tour.

Aileen, I have a great Dire Straits song requests that was just hitting the charts about this time of year in early 1981, even before "Telegraph Road". I first heard this song while I was in Basic Military Training. When I hear it now, it takes me back to those old Army days. It's called, "Skateaway". It's about a female skating around the big city listening to rock music on her portable radio with headphones on, torturing taxi drivers just for fun, as the song says and drawing attention to herself. It was a common and popular thing in those days for girls to skate the streets of towns and cities. Most guys, like me, was skateboarding like many still do. I chose this video because it's so damn good and fun. The nostalgia is so epic. This version shows scenes of female skaters back in the day doing their thing in the streets. Tube socks and all. Roller girls in the streets increased tenfold after this song came out. LOL. Female Roller Derby was popular in those days too, and I heard that some skaters in this vid may have been Roller Derby Girls, but IDK. You will love this song if you like looking back at how things used to be that related to the songs of the day. "Dire Straist Skateaway HD". kzbin.info/www/bejne/joXTY62roqiqptksi=u1gmerHcs6i8q6oS

As a Detroit native this song resonates with me. An EPIC performance, and such an emotive representation. I have cousins that are 25 years older than me that are in awe of this video. I was introduced to the ‘Alchemy’ performance maybe 10-12 years ago and it blew my mind. When my parents split in 1977, one of the albums my father left with me was the self-titled Dire Straits album. I learned how to operate an OG turntable at the age of 3. No exaggeration. I used to play Steve Miller’s ‘Fly Like An Eagle’ constantly when my father had his Dual/McIntosh/JBL setup. When he left Texas to go back to Michigan, the only family I had left in North Texas was my mother and a cousin. I have them to thank for Dire Straits. Seriously underrated band. John Illsley is a BEAST! I can’t remember the drummers name, but he’s an absolute monster too. God bless.

This is the first time I’ve seen a live version of Telegraph Road and I’ve avoided it because I love the studio version so but I have to say it didn’t disappoint at all, the tempo was a little quick at times but it didn’t really detract from the performance at all.
