Fed up with my electrician grind… waking up long before dawn and for 50 hours a week and getting bullied and harassed for being artsy and or autistic, and now my shoulder was injured in January and I’ve been waiting for the insurance bastards to agree to send me for the treatment my doctors recommended… feeling used up and burnt out… not sure how to continue my career path. Would rather be in business for myself installing EV chargers in peoples garages working directly for customers on my own terms. Seems like it’s going to be some more years before they develop robots that are agile enough to do electrical work but if i own my own company and work directly for residential customers maybe the bots don’t pose a threat to my livelihood? I wrote my philosophy thesis in post labour , and ubi ethical problems. It's amazing how many of the arguments that are decades old are now more relevant than ever. I don't think that Twitter polls are relevant for this discussion, only my opinion. I wonder what you think about Phillip Van parij argumentation that UBI is justifed as tax on previous common human knowledge. (food, shelter, all utilities, education, safety, transportation, basic freedoms, all health care, etc.)

The problem I have with these polls is that they target a predominantly warm audience. So the results are not likely to be free of confirmation bias. If we go outside your potential subscriber demographic, many of these numbers would flip. In fact, the majority of people worldwide that perceive a danger in accelerated AI advancement are social media averse. I meet many of them in my work, including in corporate environments. The more intelligent the person, at least in my experience, the less likely he/she/it is to be wasting time on random opinions found on social media. I don’t mean to be negative. In fact, I would consider myself included in the optimist group. I just feel an obligation to warn that these polls are based on a warm audience, predominantly comprised of individuals that have high exposure to this type of content. On the street, or in the corporate world where I spend a lot of time, there is a lot of agitation and concern for the future. We cannot control that which we do not understand. That is the primary obstacle. The faster the pace of advancement, the less likely we are to remain in full or even partial control. We are literally rolling the dice right now.

I don’t know just how valid this statistics are in the first place. Your audience already resonates with at least some of your views on AI, UBI and similar stuff you have talked about. Also would not surprise me if the algorithm fed your videos to self employed people or people looking into becoming self employed. I'm concerned. Has no one else noticed the pro-extinction narrative? Modern movies, games, and books often show humanity as the bad guys and/or humanity going extinct. It's become more and more popular. A lot of young people actually believe that the world would be better off without us. Because I guarantee the people bringing about this final revolution are the very people who don't go out and touch the grass or look at a sunset occasionally. And I guarantee a "successor spices" will have no care for a beautiful sunset also. We are all more than our work. We still care and love the less intelligent people in our society. Because we are humans. We are good and bad and there is no perfect system of governance or perfect utopian society. No "luxury automated space communism" We will all be plugged into computers unable to face the outside, unable to form relationships. And that is already happening. Population collapse is real. And we should concentrate on turning that nightmare around rather than accelerating the process with AGI. Just sayin' and no im not a doomer! But these are very real dangers unless we steer our high technology in the right direction.

We have about 3.5 months left at my place (pallet rack manufacturing in socal) until the building is completely stripped and gutted. Two stamping pieces are going to Utah and the rest of the equipment is going to Mexico. The old plant had about 50~ people on the floor the new plant in Utah will have about 8 people, be mostly automated and make them at about 3x faster.

Working on a videogame at the weekend, making a list of fixes required, I realized that the world could run (on a basic level) with 1: all human needs met for free - guaranteed as a human right (eg: housing, food, water, heating, energy). 2. people make proposals (or requests) for things they want, want to make, create or provide - above these base needs - use AI and other humans to determine if it is indeed needed/useful/progressive/etc, and balance the decision about whether you can pursue that goal against available resources, other enthusiastic humans wanting to contribute. Most capitalist projects are - while well informed - still mostly speculative. Making the current set up (saying "I have a great plan", "give me money", "build roughly enough of something you think will meet demand") is incredibly wasteful in terms of using materials and pollution. These negatives need to be considered. Economic growth is only necessary in a world mostly built on debt.

I live in a small town in eastern Colorado. The largest employer is a company that packages and sells bird seed. The entire logistics department is run by AI. The research team tells the AI what products they want to offer and how many for the coming season. They press go, and the AI takes over ordering all required materials, setting up shipping and delivery. The workers simply unload trucks when they arrive. Package the seed, and load up trucks with the packaged seed. All on auto pilot. This logistics job used to be handled by 40 people

We are already doing UBI in most countries in the form of monthly payments for the jobless population. I think UBI that covers the basic needs is required, especially in the post AGI world. Your audience is going to represent an unusual slice of the public. I highly doubt there are many wage earners in your viewership. This audience is overwhelmingly going to be higher income urbanites from prestigious schools. Ironically, these people (coders, accountants, project managers, etc) are probably going to be the most hard hit by AI. Lower wage jobs (handyman, plumber, trucker, cook) are probably going to be much more difficult to replace.
