Yeah to be honest I like SRV better. I love Hendrix and respect the HELL out of the things he did with a guitar but SRV had a cleaner, more coherent sound. When Hendrix was hammering it at top speed things could feel a little too chaotic, a little too sloppy. You never really get that with SRV, even at max tempos he still sounds fully in control of what he's doing.

Very well said and quite correct. The same is true of Jimi, of course. There is an interview where Chas Chandler tells about Jimi having a guitar around his neck literally all day long. Jimi would play whilst in the bathroom "because he liked the echo. It was no accident that he was that good."

Hearing Amber saying "you have to WATCH him play", made me think of this- long but cool story- I was at SRV's last show at Alpine Valley. As he was playing his encore- "Voodoo Chile"- my wife was sitting on the lawn watching on the jumbotron. I told her- "Stand up and watch this- you will never see anything like this ever again" Little did I know at the time it would be the last song he ever played with his band Double Trouble". I cried real tears the next morning when I heard the news, hell, I'm tearing up now.

100% ! Always have believed that about his lyricism. How about... Bold As Love: [Verse 1] Anger, he smiles towering In shiny metallic purple armor Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him Her fiery green gown Sneers at the grassy ground Blue are the life-giving waters Taken for granted They quietly understand The once happy turquoise armies Lay opposite ready But wonder why the fight is on [Verse 2] My red is so confident he flashes Trophies of war and ribbons of euphoria Orange is young, full of daring But very unsteady for the first go around My yellow in this case is not so mellow In fact, I'm trying to say it's frightened like me And all these emotions of mine Keeps holding me from Giving my life to a rainbow like you

It's one of the most simple songs Jimi ever wrote...until you try to play it. It's not just sped-up blues riffs. It's something pure and perfect, but deceivingly easy-sounding, written in the Key of Genius.. I like that Stevie Ray played a lot of Jimi's riffs and runs, but he mainly played his own lines that meshed seamlessly. "Little Wing" was a perfect fit for Jimi's "Axis: Bold as Love" album, which just didn't sound like anything else he'd released yet. He showed he could be a volume and feedback monster, but inside him was the melodic heart of an Angel.

I had a former colleague who as a late teen immigrated to Canada from Germany without a pot to piss in. It was in the 1980's and he went AWOL on his mandatory military service in Germany. On route he flew from Germany to NY City with just a couple hundred bucks in his pocket. Wandering the streets of NY he happened upon a little bar & went inside. There was SRV paying for a relatively small number of patrons. My colleague had never heard of SRV and it seemed to him that nobody else there knew him either. He spent his first afternoon in North America getting drunk listening to SRV! How awesome that must have been!

Every time I watch anything from this concert I tear up from both joy and sadness. Joy because he is such a gift to music and guitarists around the world where his music is just a real joy and inspiration to hear, then sadness because we lost him to soon and knowing we can never see him again on stage and what else he could have done. SRV was my favorite as soon as I heard him for the first time early in his career and fortunately I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform live a couple times... I still clearly remember the morning I heard the news of his passing, I don't think I have ever gotten over it which probably contributes to my emotions watching the El Mocambo concert because this show is So Purely SRV in an intimate setting, just him his favorite guitar and the great Double Trouble backing him up.

JAY, YOU ARE THE MAN!! Glad you found SRV cause I love to watch your reactions... Believe me, you won't find a bad performance by him. React to "Sound Check" and be blown away at a sound check, not even a performance... Amber, you asked that we tell you who our favorite artist is.....Mine has to be Elvis Presley! From 1954 - 1977 he did Rock & Roll, Pop, Country, and Gospel and sold millions of records in each area. His Concerts were attended by fans from all over the world because he didn't do any shows overseas. They CAME here to see him perform. I will admit I was there when rock & roll was born and have been an Elvis fan than and will always be a fan. Keep on keepin' on. BCNU...

@@sharrongrant6240 "Life Without You" was written by Stevie & is on his 1985 album "Soul To Soul" in memory of his great friend and mentor Charley Wirz. Charley owned "Charley's Guitar Shop" in Dallas where the two met in the 70's. Charley was the person who worked on all of Stevie's guitars. All of Stevie's guitars have names. One of his favorite is one Charley pieced together for him - the while & black one which Stevie named "The Charley Statocaster". They were super close & Stevie honored their friendship with the song. It's got a lot of heart in it. I think it's why it's my favorite. ❤

Jay's Question: "How is he playing without strumming it?" Answer: If you press down hard(ish) on a string, it makes a noise whether or not you're strumming with your other hand. You'll see this in solos a lot when a guitarist "finger taps" a bunch of (usually quick) notes with one or both hands.
@ultraslowhand

Used heaviest gauge guitar strings so he could do the extreme bending he did without breaking them and massively strong hands helped. too. Have you ever seen him play guitar behind his back just as good as in front. #1 in my book of guitar players as he stands on the shoulders of Jimi as he added to Jimi's greatness in my opinion. 1957 Stratocaster to boot!
