Karen. Loving your lessons and beauty of your results, especially the depth. I’ve recently begun watercolor painting. One teacher whose YT I watched and tried some suggested cold press paper. I notice you frequently use hot press. I assume it is more textured which I would like. Is it because you’re doing so much wet on wet? How do I chose?
@KarenRiceArt
@KarenRiceArt 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Barbara for your great comment and question. I use all of the different surfaces of watercolour painting. I find in the abstract plastic card paintings, hot pressed helps the paint flow more, but you could use cold pressed as well. Maybe have a little dabble and see what suits you best! Good luck & happy painting! :)

Your final results are very reminiscent of the California artist, Birgit O'Connor. She has a marvelous atmospheric landscape class, and one of her paintings is very much like yours. I really loved your approach, very brave! (but, it's only paper as they say, right?). I'm curious what you did with the thicker paint part that was drier on the left in the middle? I think it was a bank, or mid-ground camping area? (pardon me, can't think of the word I want). What a unique and lovely way to work! I'm going to try this tomorrow! Did you find it worked very differently on the hot press vs cold/rough paper? Love your 2 colors!
@KarenRiceArt
@KarenRiceArt 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Frances, thank you for your message, I shall check Brigit out...Really glad you like the video and I think the thicker part you mean, was a result of spraying, tilting and adding more paint with a knife, pure experimentation :)

Can I ask how you held the paper down.The paper always buckles, even holding the paper down with masking tape doesn't stop the paper buckling. How do you combat that?
@KarenRiceArt
@KarenRiceArt 4 жыл бұрын
Great question... If you buy heavier paper that will help but it is expensive. I use blocks which seem to help with the buckling. I have updated the listing to give links to the paper I have used. Thanks :)

@foreverjoy9334 4 жыл бұрын
@@KarenRiceArt Thank you, I was just researching these blocks. I will try this soon, its one thing that has really put me off watercolour painting because I want a quality end product and even slight buckling annoys me. I noticed you didn't have it taped down and that intrigued me. I'm used to working in oils, had watercolour materials for years that i need to put to use and experiment with, this problem has literally been holding me back because i didn't know how to overcome it properly.

Love your paintings and your Channel - I just found you. Thanks for sharing your wonderful work! The method you are using with the palette knife and spray bottle reminds me of another of my favorite watercolor painters Lena Gemzøe from Denmark. You should check her out, she’s fun to watch.

Thank you Eva! So glad you like my work! Lena’s work is beautiful! it’s so freeing up not to use brushes in watercolour! :)

When I go to the sea of grass link all their products are sold out. Disappointing. Lovely painting you did though.

Hi Diane, thank you! And yes you are right they have sold out of their watercolours...that's just recent... maybe contact them to ask whether they will be making any more? :)

Karen Rice I thought maybe your link might bother people as it basically achieves nothing! They look like they are going out of production as all their products are OOS - do you have any connection with them or did you just find them in a shop in Cornwall?

Karen Rice Sounds good. I have been a subscriber to your channel for a while and appreciate what you do for inspiration to us laggards who don’t paint often enough! Keep up the good work - KZbin is a bit of a jungle isn’t it!

curious as to why this is called 'fun'. it is far more painterly and intelligent, and way less conservative and chocolate box than typical watercolour landscapes.

Thank you so much Eloise! I had so much "fun" painting this picture! It's exciting because you never know quite what is going to happen! I hope you give it a go! 😀
