This is a follow on from the last video where I tried out Lena Gemzoe's stye and process. I decided to use a similar process but to also use palette knives and some of my normal processes of hake brushes and spray bottle.
Let me know what you think? It was almost getting a bit muddy. I really like the way the palette knife pushes the burnt sienna into the paper staining it so no matter how deeply you scratch the surface paint off it remains in the paper.
The painting was painted from a memory of the bay of fires in Tasmaina as I saw it mentioned on TV the other day and it is where my wife and I got engaged. Lovely part of the world.
Happy painting!!

Rives BFK etching paper. Probably best to source this from your local store so you can look after the paper and not have it posted unless you are buying a large amount of paper and it will be looked after. There is nothing worse than getting hundreds of sheets all with a indent in them. Having said that you can actually source this paper from amazon:

Some people have been extremely happy with the state of the paper when it arrived (and some not!)
I love this paper it is soft and lights are lifted easily from it.

I've been watching a lot of watercolor videos here on KZbin lately, from different gifted artists. Watching artist, like you, gives me calm. The way you make the colors "dance" on the paper. It is so beautiful.

Thanks for sharing this. I recently discovered Lena myself. There is something so organic in the flow of pigment on water in this process. It has encouraged me to try something large and free myself. Keep sharing.

Hi John, your welcome! I agree, the flow of watercolour on the page is pretty amazing and getting to know that whole process will take a while but I like the idea of incorporating that into my existing style and subject matter. I'd love to see any results you get from doing that free style. scottswinson1@mac.com thanks for watching!

Aqueducts near an ancient Roman city? A bridge near a quaint modern village? A river dam near a beautiful country side? This is the beauty of abstract art, it's what you see that makes it into a reality!

Hi Stephanie! Yes I had not thought of the aqueduct but I totally see that! I know what you mean. The longer I am around art, looking at other peoples, producing some myself, the more I love abstraction! I think it is timeless! Thanks! 👍👍

Thanks George! Yes it’s funny because I’m listening to an audiobook at the moment entitled “start with why” and yes I agree with you! My why is to paint what inspires me but more importantly to help others find the joy of painting and viewing the landscape around us and that every person deserves to have original art in their home if they wand to! Not just for the well off few! Thanks for watching! 👍🙏

@@ScottSwinson I am in West Ealing. It is slowly improving and people are getting tired of being tired and no certainty. I am ok. Meditating and creating as much as I want so the pace is right. But yes miss friends and things we did outside. But soon we can come out again and enjoy those moments we took for granted more. Hope you are well? Where are you based now?

I’m glad things are improving gradually. I live south of Sydney in a place called Engadine right next to the Royal National Park. It is a lovely part of the world but I do miss mountains that are so close when you live in London. Hope things go well over the coming weeks for you. Thanks for watching! 👍🙏

Beautiful! I love your etching trick! I haven’t had much luck with the 100% cotton paper. I went to a 25% cotton and it worked better but I wonder if maybe I wasn’t using enough water.🤔 Thanks for sharing! This is beautiful as usual Scott. I was very interested to see with the sort of right angles you applied the original lines of paint, how it would go. I’ve been doing some in your style and Lena’s and wondered if I can send you some to tell me what you think. I am not on Facebook or instagram. Maybe I should get on Instagram. Can i email you some photos please Scott. Hope you and yours are well.

Do you ever block out a portion, let dry , then come in and add a second layer?
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 3 жыл бұрын
HI Big O, yes in quite a few of my painting I will do a layer of warms, then come in with the stronger and cooler colours then dry again then do another layer sometimes. There are a few demonstrations where I do quite a few layers like "How to Paint a Sky in Watercolour". Hope that answers your question. Cheers Scott

What are you doing with the yard stick to get a white line? It looks like you’re rubbing the paper. I love Lena’s work too. She’s been a big influence on me. I like what you are doing too.
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Janet, when I use that stick it is a metal, meter ruler and I use a razor blade and run it sideways across the ruler and end up scratching back to the white paper. I prefer that process than using gauche or masking fluid. That way I don’t need to be too planned! Thanks for watching! The first time I watched Lena paint it was just magical! Talented people make things look easy and don’t seem to be consciously thinking about what to do. Next... 👍🙏

This is so beautiful and I’ve been playing with this technique - but I have been using 300 lb watercolor paper. I have yet to have a complete success, but I’ll keep trying. What is the benefit of using BFK etching paper instead of watercolor paper?
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bes, the main reason I have been using Rives BFK is because I have a big pile of full sheets in my map draws so it’s there ready to use. I have also used Somerset paper and arches. All of them work well in fact I think I’d be better off using a paper with more sizing ( watch my video about paper if you don’t know about this) when I’m wetting it so much instead of the BFK. Thanks for tuning in! 👍🙏
