In this video I paint a landscape of early morning light Dolls Point, Sydney, Australia. It is helpful to know when starting out in watercolour and painting on a large scale how to go about doing this. I start with a wash so raw sienna then dry then I wet the whole page with a wide hake brush then bring in the sky (mix of light red and cobalt blue) and retain the white of the page for the bright area shining through the clouds.
If you have any questions feel free to ask me. Sorry about my head getting in the way a couple of times.
When you are starting to paint in watercolour you might want to paint on a smaller scale but it is still good to paint with strong pigment and a big brush that way you will be painting big picture rather than getting bogged down by too much detail. It helps if you are referring to a photo which I was, to squint when looking at it as this helps you to just see the dark darks and light lights and paint accordingly.
Enjoy! :)

There were so many stages there that I would have stopped and said it was a beautiful painting. But your vision and creative ability see beyond each stage, looking for a bit more light, a bit more contrast, a touch more texture and developing the focal point. It's like watching a Samuri sword maker keep doubling the steel to refine more a more the crafted form. It seems to me that the real beauty and transcendental nature of art is the process itself. The end product, no matter how wonderful, is just a part of a process that started with a blank piece of paper. Then you as an artist are able to pour your feelings into the flow of paint and water and dance of the brush across the paper. Your artistic eye assessing and readdressing each stage, your heart and soul speaks out through your art and that is truly the sense of wonder I get from watching your demonstrations. I try to paint this way sometimes, although I'm still experimenting a lot and working on technique to express myself more consistently. With only 3 years painting experience and no artistic background, the journey is slow and bumpy. However, it is always fun and enjoyable and it's made a huge difference to my life having discovered watercolour painting as a hobby. I'm often recommending your videos to others on KZbin and to people who I know that paint. Your style and method is really something quite special. There are many abstract landscape artists, but your approach has something unique I think - it has an innocence and wonder about it, almost like how a child might imagine the world before education and adulthood teaches them to define and categorise everything. You break free of that bond and create something beyond those confines. Your frame of reference is the landscape, but it's a landscape of the unfettered mind. Yes, you could say I'm a massive fan of your work, long may you run Scott Swinson.

I think why didn't you do this scott and Stop! but for some reason when I'm painting I am seeing things in a different way to when I am seeing it on the screen. Not necessarily worse, just different. That is what makes art so interesting. The decisions of what you do on the page are infinite and when to stop is an unknown. And as you know with watercolour once you have gone further ahead you can't go back to where you were! Happy painting Ned!

I am sure you will be able to Hazel! It is one of my favourite paintings and has inspired quite a few others as well! Including some of the massive watercolours I do for people! 200cm x 100cm. The secret to this painting is the minimal amount of brush strokes in the sky and the difference in tones in the sky. That is the hardest part. All the other bits after that are pretty easy to do!

Is etching paper the same as printmaking paper, like for lithography?
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, etching paper is printmaking paper. You don’t have to use that specific paper. Somerset also does quite a soft watercolour paper. In some ways the Rives BFK paper is slightly harder to use as it has less sizing so can turn into blotting paper and a mess wet in wet if you are not careful. Let me know what you find and how it goes! 👍🙏

Is the etching paper 100% cotton. What is the difference from watercolor paper to etching paper! Thank you
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Francine. Yes the Rives BFK etching paper is 100% cotton paper. I am sure arches could answer this question with lots of detail. My experience is that the etching paper is softer, creates really soft, lovely wet in wet washes. It does not stand up to lots of hard work with a brush as it has less sizing in it compared to normal watercolour paper. I has slightly less tooth to it than medium, cold pressed arches paper. Hope this helps! 👍🙏

Hi Scott I was in the process of in rolling in your Instagram advertised watercolour classes or workshops which was advertised at $19.97.however when I got to the PayPal pay off it was 57 or $54 I think. Allowing for theUS dollar rate it still doesn’t explain the difference so disappointed I flunked out. If you can help me to get a grip on this I would be grateful thank you

Hi Hannah! That does not make sense. The max it should have been is $30 with the currency exchange rate. Did you get any extra courses? I’m sorry about that. I don’t handle that end of the process. The best thing is to contact the customer support team. Cheers scott

Hi Marco, yes I know! I was experimenting with the title. I have lots of other videos you can look at though to help you if you are starting out in watercolour. The next video I do with this title will be in real time with advice and help along the way. Glad you like the painting! 👍

I love your work. However your voice is soft and comes across as mumbling. Your music over shadows your voice. Therefore I have stopped watching.
